  • Relaxed, welcoming farm site in the green Somerset countryside
  • A 15-minute drive from Burnham-on-Sea; half an hour from Wells
  • Dogs and barbecues welcome; a mile from village centre and two pubs
Whisk yourself away to Wedmore, Wells or Wookey Hole from Splott Farm Camping, a relaxed Somerset site roughly a mile from the quiet village of Mark. Families, couples, solo travellers and small groups are all welcome here, as are barbecues and well-behaved dogs. Whole swathes of Somerset are within your reach at Splott Farm Camping. This spot is right on the edge of the wildlife-packed Somerset Levels, an area known for its willow production, while the coast and Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are both about 15 minutes away by road. The gorgeous Quantock Hills (40 minutes) and Dunster in Exmoor National Park (an hour) are both also doable as day trips. That said, there's also a lot to tempt you to simply stick around on site. Family-run since 1968, this spacious farm comes with basic amenities like toilets and showers, plus a small café-bar where fresh barista-made coffee is available at weekends; there is also a small on-site shop. On top of that you also get a heap of fresh country air, views of grazing cows and – if you're prepared to walk a mile to get to them – two friendly pubs in the village centre. Mark is also lucky enough to have a village store and post office if you'd like to shop local or send a few postcards to friends back home during your stay.

Local attractions

There's a lot to do in this part of the world for those drawn to the coast: Burnham-on-Sea (15 minutes' drive) has a big sandy beach and lots of classic Victorian seaside features, plus a biannual food and drink festival, amusement arcades and gardens to see. For a wilder stretch of shingle coast with impressive cliffs, check out Kilve beach (40 minutes) and set out for a stroll along the coast path. Nature havens for birdwatching and other outdoorsy pursuits aren't in short supply either – you're likely to see quite a bit of birdlife if you bring a pair of binoculars to RSPB Ham Wall (20 minutes) or Westhay Moor National Nature Reserve (20 minutes), and there are some great walks to be had around these areas too. Other attractions worth prioritising include the pretty cathedral city of Wells (half an hour), Cheddar Gorge (25 minutes), Wookey Hole Caves (30 minutes) or, for far-ranging vistas over the Bristol Channel, Brean Down Fort (40 minutes). For a flavour of Exmoor National Park, meanwhile, call in at Dunster (an hour), where the views from the castle draw visitors from far and wide.

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Friendly welcome, clean toilets & showers. Lovely flat pitch for our small campervan at the front of the site where we watched the sunset. Logs & fire pit available along with a little shop.

Disliked: Nothing really except that the grass had just been cut so our shoes got caked in the wet cuttings & it was hard to keep them out of the van!

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Good base for exploring countryside

Disliked: No electric hookup available. Facilities very basic, though pretty much as expected. Couldn't find anywhere interesting to walk the dogs...no woodland in immediate vicinity.

Liked: Beautiful setting, well maintained site and pitches. We were greeted as soon as we arrived but there was a friendly little hut with all the check in details, an honesty shop and all the info required. Facilities were clean and tidy. Cleaned daily. Perfect location for visiting the coast!

Unpowered grass site

Liked: Great little place, friendly staff, clean toilets and shower facilities. Great if you want to be out in nature, local pubs if your up for a walk. We really liked that they had a little food cubby just incase you forgot something like bug spray or even tent pegs! Definitely returning for another stay

Disliked: Just one downside, the sign to turn into the site was too small for us to see in the car so we missed the turning but now we know it won't be trouble in the future.
