General
- Family-run site on a farm five minutes' drive from Wincanton
- Glastonbury, Stonehenge and Longleat within 45 minutes' drive
- Handy stopover for journeys on the A303
In days of yore, Wincanton was often used as a stopover town where folks would change horses, eat, drink and rest on their journeys between London and South West England. These days the Somerset town is an equally convenient stopping point, close to the A303 and roughly halfway between London and Exeter.
The folks at Sunnyhill Park and Campsite are keen to uphold this tradition; their family’s been at this farm in Riding Gate (five minutes from Wincanton) for generations. Decent slumbers should be on the cards at the peaceful pitches, and there are free hot showers and firepits on site (plus a supply of logs for sale to keep the flames crackling).
Eats can be acquired at nearby takeaways, restaurants, cafés and country pubs, and it’s less than a mile to the nearest pub for your evening pint(s). No promises on the fresh horses front though – they do have horses here (along with sheep, goats and chickens) but the owners would rather you leave them where you find them.
A mighty handy stopover it may be, but it’s also a fine place in its own right if you’ve got more time on your hands. Spend your Wincanton days cheering on the horses at the racecourse, visiting the Discworld Emporium or truffling out the tributes to Sir Terry Pratchett around the town centre. For more days out, Glastonbury, Longleat and Stonehenge are all within a 45-minute drive.

Hi Yes we do allow fire pits and for many that and some marsh mallows can be enough. The facilities are now having a much needed renovation and as for pitches being unlevel, this really depends where you pitch. The hay field is a large field and you have to be selective about where you pitch, i hope to have things more marked out for 2021 |

Local attractions
Devotees of Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books flock to Wincanton, not only to peruse the bits and bobs at the Discworld Emporium but also to hunt out the various tributes around the town; having been officially twinned with Ankh-Morpork, there are now several Discworld street names and a themed pub to be seen around the place.
Away from the fantasy world, real-life creatures can be seen in action at the racecourse (10 minutes’ drive) or on a drive through Longleat safari park (half an hour). If it’s motors that get you going, take the 15-minute drive to the Haynes Motor Museum instead.
Those with a sense of the mystic may like to peruse the famed slabs of Stonehenge (35 minutes) or head to Glastonbury Tor (45 minutes) to consider the legends that surround the ancient site. Less shrouded in mystery but still mighty pretty for a wander are the house and gorgeous gardens at National Trust-owned Stourhead (15 minutes).

I was so upset with this review that I wasn't going to answer as 4/10 seems so harsh
I have been walking the routes around me and have found a couple of them with issues so i will accept part of your comment as true. However i can assure you i have walked many of the routes recently and that there are routes that are 2 miles across fields to local pubs, a longer walks of 9/10 miles to the local monument Alfreds tower, and many other routes.I have been avoiding the area where the footpaths have been closed because of a dangerous bridge, and talked to the local council about upgrading gates to make access easier too. I have now recorded several of these walks onto a track and trail app that i can share with guests to follow, and have offered to take people on escorted walks next season (for a small fee) so that they can enjoy the amazing views and beauty of our countryside and woodland, as well as our local pubs.
You stayed in the overflow field that we use for part of the season. A back to basics camping in a field in the somerset rural views, firepits not to far from anywhere but in the middle of nowhere. We made a couple of showers on an old caravan chassis for guests to help with covid social distancing they were basic but affective and i am so glad you found them hot! We are planning on making a couple more outdoor mobile showers for 2021 and have spent the latest lock down revamping the shower block which should be ready for January . Maybe you will change you mind visit again and let me take you on an escorted walk and you can buy me a cider
