The Batch Campsite: Our first use of a firepit

General

  • Small and friendly wild camping-style site at the top of the Mendips
  • Three miles from Cheddar and within walking distance of several pubs
  • Surrounded by woodland: look out for deer, badgers, foxes and buzzards

Small, simple, in a wildlife haven, welcoming families and well-behaved dogs, surrounded by all sorts of activities for all sizes, and on the Mendip Pub Trail – how many hurrahs could you give The Batch Campsite? (Quite a few more, it turns out – it's only three miles from splendid Cheddar.)

The Batch is rightly popular with wild camping and quiet holiday types, who come for its scenic location (watch out for the sunsets), its closeness to Cheddar and the piles of things to do nearby such as hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing and caving… It's surrounded by woodland, so also watch out for deer, badgers, foxes and buzzards all around.

The site is on the end of a private road at the top of the Mendips and has been deliberately set up in simple style so that guests can experience a wild camping vibe in a safe space. Campfires are allowed – naturally – and Tim and team can help you fire one up for cooking if you need a bit of a hand. The team can also provide a range of local produce to cook up your own barbecue including trout, burgers, sausages, bacon, eggs, ribs, cheese and cider (all from within a three-mile radius): let them know when you arrive or drop them a note in the Special requests box after booking.

And yet more hurrahs: The Batch is within easy walking distance of several Somerset pubs, all pulling gallons of local beers and ciders alongside some dishing up some right good pub food. Most of the neighbouring farms make their own cider, but you can also walk down to the Thatchers cider farm.

The Batch facilities include a toilet block, fridge-freezer and a washing-up area; please note that showers aren't currently available for wild camping guests.

Please note

Minimum spacing of 5 metres between pitches.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Nothing was too much trouble for Tim the owner. He came round and chatted with campers on each pitch daily to make sure everyone was happy and that they had all they needed. No showers but each pitch was provided with their own exclusive 'Porta-Potty' in one of the converted (concrete) stables. Toilet paper, paper towels, hand cleanser, and washing/up bowl all provided. The toilets were checked/cleaned three times a day. One central fresh water tap adjacent to the toilets. Email him in advance and Tim will be able to provide locally produced eggs, bacon, meat products, even fresh fish. Very flexible regarding arrival and departure times. Good views across into Wales. Popular with friends camping together in 2/3/4 man tents arriving by car or bicycle, couples in the 20's and 30's, as well as young families in a 6 berth. Younger kids will delight in the friendly 'up close' hens wandering around the campsite. There are six pre-made fire pits and the local woods are free to forage for firewood or Tim can supply a sack full of logs and kindling for around fiver.

    Disliked:

That bird that sang its heart out at 5am and again at 7pm! Perhaps he/she was looking for a mate:-) Whilst the campsite is all on one level, it's on a 'step' adjacent to the brow of a hill. The toilets are on another step below. Each accessed up/down along a slightly sloping pathway. Underneath a top layer of about 6-8cm of loam the ground is rocky, so come prepared with long hard ground 'rock' pegs and peg at a 45 degree angle and all will be fine.

Tim is super friendly and helpful. The site is very cute and has amazing views. The chickens are great as well, they're very sociable. There's a beautiful pub just down the road which is handy. Lots of nice walks in the area. The toilets are good as well, super basic, clean and plenty of space, almost like a wash room with a little table and chair and you get one for each group, so it was perfect.

I stayed alone with my young son and felt totally safe at The Batch. The owner was so friendly and helpful, and full of tips about local walks. The view from our pitch was stunning and there was plenty of child-friendly exploring to be done from the site. The fire pits are fab.

We both loved meeting and stroking the rescue hens, and my son was very excited to collect an egg from them!

There was plenty of space between us and the other campers, felt safe covid-wise. We were only able to stay one but but my son was sad to leave and we will definitely stay again.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike as such, but just be aware the little road leading to the site is VERY uneven. Make sure you check your tyres before you go!

Great little camp site in fantastic location. We had young children and it was perfect for them. Good to have your own covid secure toilet and lots of space. Amazing walks straight from the campsite and we didn't have to drive anywhere with pubs a short stroll. Tim was very helpful. Will we definitely stay again.

Local attractions

The small farm of The Batch Campsite is between a National Trust woodland and a Bronze Age settlement: you might already have heard that this part of Somerset is fairly historic… Cheese, gorge, caves and climbing are three miles away over the hill at Cheddar and Tim and co can provide instruction if you want to tackle any Cheddar or Mendip caving or climbing.

It's full-on walking and hiking land here too, around the gorge and hills, the area's cider farms or the Mendip Way's 50 miles over the Mendip Hills from Weston-super-Mare to Frome. The Mendip Pub or Butcombe Trail is an agreeably scenic totter along 45 miles connecting six pubs owned by Butcombe Brewery and through Priddy, Axbridge, Bleadon, Rowberrow, and Compton Martin.

Yet more attraction and activity hurrahs are in the area, like seaside days at Weston-super-Mare, heritage at Wells Cathedral, Glastonbury Tor and medieval Axbridge, or a shoot down the slopes at the Avon Ski Centre.
