Camping with friends

General

  • Award-winning park in a green wildlife haven
  • A mile and a half from Chard and 12 from Charmouth
  • Heated outdoor pool, play area, tennis, and firepits for hire

There’s more than a hint of Enid Blyton’s Famous Five about Alpine Grove Touring Park: pitches among secret groves of rhododendron, dappled with shade from the oak trees towering above, plus den building in the woods, scavenger trails, biking and hiking adventures around the local countryside, picnics and sausage-fuelled singalongs by the fire. Bet they sell lashings of ginger beer in the on-site shop…

Guests here can choose between sun or shade, seclusion among the rhododendrons or a more open grassy area for their pitch. In addition to all the good old-fashioned fun outlined above, there’s a heated outdoor pool, tennis, a play area, plus of course the usual amenities for ablutions, laundry, refuse and recycling. Firepits are available for hire, and well-behaved dogs are welcome.

A level cycle path runs along the disused railway line between Chard and Ilminster, or for a more challenging ride, the 80-mile loop of the South Somerset Cycle Route goes right past the site. There are also plenty of walks for all abilities, and golf, fishing and horse riding nearby.

Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award AA 3 pennants

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including firepits and logs, cycle hire are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Lovely site in beautiful setting. Friendly owners nice little shop with all your essentials. Lovely swimming pool.
    Toilets clean .

    Disliked:

Showers could do with freshening up . Or updating.

From the manager...

Our toilet block gets is decorated each year before we open for camping. It starts to look tired toward the end of the season, but it is not possible to redecorate while people are needing to use it. We have a longer term plan to replace the toilet block with something much more modern however this is unlikely to become a reality for a year or two due to planning permission etc.

Thank you fro your feedback.

Very friendly welcome from the family running the site. The little shop carries all the camping essentials at normal shop prices. The only vaguely expensive things were the local meats and dairy that lookes to be of very good quality. The showers were clean, modern and free! The site itself was a woodland grove behind a secure electronic gate. You camp or park beneath tall trees that sing you to sleep. The swimming pool was small but people seemed happy to be in it. The pizza van rocked up at 17:00 and my goat's cheese and onion chutney was really rather nice. The camp owners also let me borrow a hook up cable which was unexpected. It's a nice little spot, 10 miles north of the Jurassic Coast; go see.

Local attractions

All the attractions of south Somerset, Devon and Dorset are within easy reach, so it’s impossible to list more than a few highlights here… The popular seaside town of Lyme Regis is renowned for its Cobb beach, fossils and links to Jane Austen, and has a good museum. Forde Abbey, a stately home which used to be a Cistercian monastery, has stunning gardens, and soft fruit lovers are likely to find its ‘pick your own’ farm berry exciting (jostaberries, anyone?).

Europe’s biggest collection of naval aircraft is hosted at the Fleet Air Arm Museum in Yeovilton, which regularly hosts special events, from Dalek invasions to drag racing.

Within the lovely orchards of Perry’s Cider Mills, there’s an interesting museum of old cider presses housed in a 16th-century barn (and, of course, abundant opportunities to sample the results in the farm shop and tearooms).

Must see

  • Mapperton House & Gardens (17.7 kilometres)
  • Montacute House (18.7 kilometres)
  • Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (21.4 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Loughwood Meeting House (11.8 kilometres)
