General

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Cafe on site, plus lake for swims, fishing and watersports

There are many reasons why one might choose a lakeside location for one’s hols – looking for a spot of fishing perhaps, or easy access to freshwater swims, or somewhere to launch your paddleboards and kayaks.

Any and all of the above are possible at Litton Lakes, a family-run site on a working farm in the pretty Dorset village of Litton Cheney. Its lakeside setting makes it a fine spot for water-based activities (note you'll need to bring your own kit for fishing or watersports), or simply settling down to take in the rural views. Firepits can be hired on site and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth for this last one – particularly welcome after a dip in the water.

The area is something of a walkers’ paradise too, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities).

Back at base, the site’s own Purple Turtle Café opens at weekends for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away.

This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too.

It was a really nice campsite. We were alone, given the season, but it was still super nice as we managed to make a big fire, and decorate our tents. The owner and manager were very accommodating and incredibly helpful. The surrounding area is beautiful.

Beautiful site with lovely views. Very well kept with clean facilities and lovely people too. Came straight over to us as soon as we parked up and told us everything we needed to know about the site and places/local attractions near us. Would definitely recommend coming here and would love to go back in the summer to do some kayaking in the lake. There was a beach not far from the site at all with beautiful views. We really enjoyed our stay.

Lovely quiet site when we stayed, large flat pitch, good hard road round site.
Good large dog walking field and paths everywhere.
Decent size pond for fishing, SUP , Kayak etc - not many fish being caught but the water is gin clear. Location is excellent although roads through the village to the North / East (A35 Dorchester) are rather narrow for a large caravan / motorhome - best to approach from the West - (Burton). Fantastic for stargazing and bird watching etc - Kingfishers on the little stream. Pub 5 just mins walk and 30 mins to another good one in Puncknowle.
Great for walkers, 1 hour hike to fabulous sea views up on the knoll to the south, another 30 mins and your down on the beach at West Bexington.
Fire baskets were very popular - pre-booking advised!
    We will be back!

    Disliked:

Only one flushing loo for those without their own facilities and the sluice manhole is a tad tricky to use up the lane. It's an open, rather exposed field site (good for the stargazing!) - a hedge up the middle of the field might make it look a little prettier and act as a wind break for the tenting types - they were getting battered by the north west wind.
Lake might benefit from some weed clearance to make a few 'hot spots' by the fishing swims as us anglers like it a bit easier!

Stunning location tucked away down some country lanes with a very well kept camp site. All facilities were clean and tidy. Really lovely sport for sunrises. Nice short journey down to the beach and not to far to Lyme Regis itself. Will definitely be recommending! Max

Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
