What a spectacularly well set site this is… do try your best to settle in for quite some time…

Portesham Dairy Farm Camp Site is in peaceful Dorset countryside on the Jurassic Coast (week one of your hol) and easily accessible to Weymouth, Dorchester and the Dorset beaches: that should cover weeks two and three… Your eats and drinks are excellently sorted from here too, as a farm shop with café is a minute's amble from the site, and the owners' local, the King's Arms, is within a couple of minutes' stroll.

The site is on the edge of the village of Portesham, in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and 15 minutes' drive from Weymouth. It's family run with a dedicated team that takes pride in its modern clean amenities: the purpose-built facilities block comes with toilets, showers, basins, hairdryers and hand dryers, baby changing area and an enclosed washing-up space with hot and cold water. There's also a laundry room (with drinks machine and tourist info), as well as three chemical disposal points across the site.

A small play area is to hand for kids. The site welcomes quiet and friendly dogs; a footpath leads from the farm across fields and countryside.

    All the facilities are great and well maintained and clean. Perfect place for anyone to stop and settle down into for a few days.
    Disliked: 

    Unfortunately due to covid measures all restaurants in the area were closed.

It is very much appreciated by all the staff here on the campsite. It is a shame about the local restaurants as during normal times, we have 3 pubs all within a 2 mile radius (Kings Arms in the village and 2 more in Abbotsbury, the next village which is a 5 minute drive.)

Unfortunately, these unprecedented times are very hard for businesses and the Kings Arms had to close.

However, before we went into tier 3, they were re-directing customers to their sister company "Coach House Inn" which is only 15 minutes away.

    We booked a pitch through pitch up.com at Portesham Dairy Farm Campsite near Weymouth. The facilities are very clean and spacious. The pitches are tidily set out and clearly marked. The cost was very reasonable. The staff are very helpful and friendly. We would definitely recommend to everyone. We are going back there again at a later date.

    Clean, functional, everything worked, pitch was level, site has a secure automatic entrance. Great if all you want is a nice simple pitch as a one or two night stop over or if you're happy to travel to places. The local shop, offsite, is good only a minute's walk away.
    Disliked: 

    Nothing there other than the basic facilities. Not really anywhere for kids to play other than the grass and tiny playground. E.g. no stream, wood, etc. After I had done a couple of walks to Abbotsbury and Hardy's Monument there was nothing left to do. Local shop closes at 4pm - no good when you find the pub is closed and it's 6pm.

Hi Daniel, thank you for your feedback. We have a small stream that runs down the side of the site and also have trees/woodland etc surrounding the whole site. The farm shop opposite us are trying to extent their licence so they can open for longer. The pub opens 6pm-11pm every evening.

    Very straightforward and well located site. Clean and new facilities, automated access via number plate recognition. Electrical hook up worked perfectly. Pleasant place to get away from everything. Farm shop just opposite for provisions

    Not the most characterful site, but that wasn’t what we were after!

Semi serviced pitches start from £17 per night for 2 adults with an additional charge for extra adults starting from £5 per night which is very reasonably priced, although you feel this additional charge is expensive we hope you will consider staying with us again in the near future.

Local attractions

However long you stay here (at least a couple of weeks, preferably), there's enough to see and do around Dorset to entertain all ages and tastes. Ditch the car if you prefer: the local bus stop is 150 yards from the farm entrance, to pick up the Jurassic Coast route bus (X53) running from Exeter to Poole.

The Portesham Dairy Farm team recommends a climb up to the Hardy Monument on Black Down (five minutes' drive) as a nifty way to see Dorset and its splendid coastline (the monument isn't to the writer Thomas Hardy as you might expect in these parts, but to Vice Admiral Thomas Hardy, a commander at the Battle of Trafalgar; do be sure to tell that to the kids). You should be able to see the Devon coast, the Mendip Hills and the Isle of Wight from here on a clear day; just clamber the 120 steps up to the viewpoint.

Also much recommended is Abbotsbury, home of the famed swannery as well as subtropical gardens and a kids' farm (also five minutes' drive), and the golden sands, sand sculptures and fair rides of Weymouth, 15 minutes from the farm. Portland (25 minutes) is also a must: visit the lighthouse, forage for fossils and come down the hill from the top of town for stunning views of the coast and Chesil Beach.
