Hardstanding pitches and facilities

General

  • Quiet farm site surrounded by footpaths in the Dorset village of Ansty
  • Half an hour's drive from Weymouth, Poole and the Jurassic Coast
  • Farm shop on site; pub with food next door

They might not make beer at Brewery Farm, but this fab Dorset site serves up good times in grand surrounds, and there's a pub right next door for good measure...

The said hostelry keeps the celebrated ales of the Hall and Woodhouse Brewery, who began their operation right here in the village of Ansty in the 18th century... and who instantly profited from a contract to supply beer to the army camped hereabouts waiting to see off Napoleon’s fleet.

If you’re into history, there’s lots of it to be supped and savoured in the area; same goes for walks, beaches, boat rides... the whole lot of it easily accessible from a berth on this peaceful and friendly site.

Facilities include a shop, selling the farm’s own produce; if you want to grill up a feast alfresco, go ahead, barbecues are permitted. The suitably ancient and rural inn over the road serves fresh locally-sourced food as well.

Fancy exploring the area slowly? Ask the team to point you towards the network of country footpaths, through some of Dorset’s finest countryside.

Excellent, spotless facilities. Very friendly and helpful host. Beautiful location. Will definitely return in better weather.

    Disliked:

Not actually a dislike but could do with more gravel on hardstanding and paths to electric points and chemical toilet disposal point as ground very boggy during wet weather.

Some shortcomings but overall a good site25/12/2020

  • Liked:

The shower rooms are excellent. Big, clean and bright, with a sink, radiator and loo. Wetroom style with push button shower. Finish and decor are first class.
The pub across the road looked good, although we did not use it.
    Farm shop on site.

    Disliked:

Although the shower rooms are excellent, you cannot change the water temperature. Not really a problem but would like the option.
The showers are the fixed shower head type. I prefer a shower head I can move around or hand hold.
Communal dish washing sink is open air, but under cover. A long trough type sink with 4 sets of taps. My washing up bowl would not fit in the sink.
Would like to see a coin operated tumble dryer as when its raining there is no way to dry wet towels.
Pitches are good but a little narrow.

Lovely site with good facilities, close to the Jurassic coast, Monkey World & other places to visit.
Friendly welcome and when asked about local walks lent a copy of booklet showing walks from the site. Didn’t do any due to the weather & ground conditions.
Will probably go again in a he summer months to enjoy the walks.

Quiet spacious site, close to pub and well stocked farm shop. Toilet and showers very nice.

    Disliked:

First come first served, so head there early for best pitches. Weather was very wet and windy and pitches up the hill most suitable for these conditions.

Local attractions

If beaches are your bag, you’ve hit the bi -time here as the Jurassic Coast is studded not just with fossils but sandy coves and rocky inlets: Lulworth Cove is a 40-minute drive away, and if you fancy something wilder, Winspit beach is accessible only by a footpath from Worth Matravers (45 minutes).

Another fine way to explore the coast is to make for Weymouth or Poole, both half an hour away, for a boat cruise. Both towns are crammed with further family-friendly attractions including funfairs and an aquarium in Weymouth, and slides and chutes and waterfalls at Poole’s Splashdown waterpark. Monkey World and the Tank Museum are also around half an hour away.

For an easy way to see the chalk hills and valleys of inland Dorset, take a seat on the Swanage Railway (50 minutes) for steam rides between the coast and Corfe Castle (40 minutes by car). The castle is well worth clambering over; if anyone’s missing the water, make for the nearby Dorset Waterpark for floating inflatable obstacle courses in a wooded lakeland setting.

For another day out with a difference, the graceful residents of Abbotsbury Swannery (45 minutes) were once kept by local monks for the purposes of scoffing at banquets. You can now visit the country's only nesting colony of mute swans and feed them, as well as get lost in the maze, hurtle about the adventure playground and roam the nearby subtropical gardens.

Must see

  • Hardy's Birthplace (11.8 kilometres)
  • The Tank Museum (16.2 kilometres)
  • Monkey World - Ape Rescue Centre (16.8 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Hardy's Cottage (11.8 kilometres)
  • Clouds Hill (13.7 kilometres)
