General

  • Peaceful working farm in the South Downs National Park
  • Within 10 minutes’ drive of woodlands, stately homes and vineyards
  • Haven for stargazers: in a Dark Sky Reserve

Green pastures, river valleys, ancient woodlands and stunning coastlines… If that’s ticking all the boxes, park up for your hols at Sandy Meadow Farm, a family-friendly site on a working farm 10 minutes’ drive from the village of Pulborough in West Sussex.

In the South Downs National Park, Sandy Meadow is a top spot for ramblers, bikers and riders: there are hundreds of miles of waymarked trails and bridleways to explore in the park, and if your interests follow more of a treasure hunting vibe, you can also have a go at geocaching.

Back on site, chill out in the quiet meadow before cooking in the guest kitchen or firing up the barbecue (pick up supplies from the supermarket 15 minutes away). If you need a break from looking after your own needs, make your way to one of the restaurants within 15 minutes to have someone else do all the hard work.

And after that? The South Downs National Park is a Dark Sky Reserve, so get outside once the sun sets, turn your eyes to the skies and take it all in.

Beautiful Location with great local walks.13/10/2020

Beautiful Location with great local walks.

    Disliked:

underwhelming reception.Turned up and was greeted by a gentleman that didn't seem to know we were even coming or how much we needed to pay.

Got directed to the pitch to find there was still rubbish from the previous campers.

Set up camp and got a good nice sleep however! up on awaking we had a young stray dog running riot on site, jumping into our camper. we have a 5 month old in the camper. We had also been told that it had happened the day before to the people next door and it has taken food and shoes! Called the owner but no joy, we proceeded to go for a walk and the stray dog came with us for an hour and a half and we were reluctant to let ours off or leave the dog alone in fear of it running into the road. Arrived back to camp and found the owners friend who said the dog was his and he couldn't keep an eye on it all of the time. this made us even more angry that he could not look after the dog. When questioned again he then changed his mind to say it wasn't his dog. The owner then rang and said it was his dog and then he changed his mind it was a friends.

The owners friend offered our money back and i accepted due to it being the worse camp i have stayed at.

we left very angry and even more upset for the poor dog and then realised that he had only given us £40 back for a £50 pitch. Over all a very disappointing night for an expensive camp site.

Quiet site as only 2 other pitches occupied. Owner very friendly

    Disliked:

Toilet and showers had not been cleaned for a long time and not once during our stay. Overpriced for what was offered.

From the manager...

The toilets are cleaned on a regular basis the facilities are basic but they are certainly not dirty This is a countryside campsite with sandy ground

Really lovely relaxed, back-to-nature feel. Loved the pitch, which we choose, being opposite the woodland so my 2 boys could explore, collect firewood, find conkers and acorns. Met friends who had also booked a pitch so had tents opposite each other. Really quiet and family friendly; felt safe. Good clean toilets and shower was powerful enough. Lovely large washing-up area. Loved being able to have open fires. Owner was very friendly and welcoming. Everything we needed for a weekend break from technology. So glad we booked.

    Disliked:

Nothing really. It was really nice and basic which is what we were after.

Nice quiet site with plenty of open space. Facilities, whilst basic (which is what we were looking for), are clean and adequate. Staff on-site are friendly, helpful, and keep a regular eye on the campsite and guests. Our first night was a week night so the site was very quiet and we had a field to ourselves with a perfect view of the stars. Logs for the fire are available for purchase so we had a nice little fire going one night.

Local attractions

There’s lots around here to keep history buffs counting their lucky stars: the Bignor Roman Villa, Coultershaw Heritage Site and Beam Pump, and the vintage steam and diesel trains of South Downs Light Railway are all roughly 10 minutes' drive from the farm.

Of course anoraks won’t be content with just that, so make a beeline for one (or all?) of the many stately homes in the area if you want a bit more. Spectacular Petworth House, Arundel Castle and Parham House are all within 15 minutes of Sandy Meadow, and you can also take a turn around the gardens at Woolbeding 25 minutes away.

Also less than half an hour from the site is Goodwood Estate – make your way here for the tour (and afternoon tea) at Goodwood House, or for something a little more high octane at the racecourse, moto circuit or aerodrome. Time your visit just right and you might be around for one of its famed events like the Festival of Speed, Goodwood Revival or the Goodwood Festival.

Tipplers, when you think of wine regions, do you think of France, Spain, Italy, Chile, South Africa and… the South Downs? No? Well you should – the area is holding its own as a wine producer, and you can do tours and tastings at Stopham Vineyard and Winery, Upperton Vineyards and Wiston Estate Winery, all less than 25 minutes away.

You can also get out in nature at Lord’s Piece untouched heathland less than five minutes away, or entertain the kids with a visit to Fishers Adventure Farm Park (20 minutes).
