Lots of space around the pitches

General

  • Peaceful, spacious family-run farm site 10 minutes from Henfield
  • 10 minutes' drive from the South Downs National Park; 20 from Brighton
  • Pick up fresh free-range eggs from the farm's hens

Alpacas, goats, Shetland ponies… the nippers are going to love this one (to be fair, it’s likely the grownups will love it too, but feel free to make out it’s for their benefit if its earns you brownie points).

If you’re fond of finding furry friends on your hols, set forth for farmyard fun at Pear Tree Farm, a family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from Henfield (and its handy supermarket and shops). This super Sussex site is part of a 12-acre property, but with guest numbers kept quite minimal to ensure oodles of peace and space for all who settle here.

Come armed with all your kit, for this is a back-to-basics place that doesn’t have such facilities as toilets and showers. Bring a barbie and you’re welcome to cook out over the coals; if the farm’s flock of happy hens has done its stuff you’re also in for a cracking brekkie feasting on fresh free-range eggs.

For days when cooking's too much faff, it’s a 20-minute trot to the local pub (just the right amount of walking to work up an appetite) or a five-minute drive to Hurstpierpoint for a little cluster of pubs and takeaways. Away from the animal antics, there are some fab days out nearby – you’re a few minutes’ drive from scenic strolls in the South Downs National Park, and 20 or so from beach times in Brighton.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro) and/or any of the following: Staffordshire bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Rottweiler, any Mastiff or Tosa.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

We love this site. Very friendly owners for whom nothing is too much trouble. They let our daughters (9 and 5) brush the ponies and they let us walk the Alpacas onleads around their paddock. They go above and beyond to give you a nice stay.

The campsite is in a really lovely spot and Derek the owner was very welcoming. Having access to feed the animals on the farm was fantastic and kept our toddler very happy and occupied :) A 5 min drive to the nearest village with some lovely local shops and places to eat. Highly recommended.

My daughter loved all the animals on the farm and the owner was very happy to show us around and inform us of the names of the alpacas, pony's, sheep and goats. Its a small and safe site which was absolutely lovely.

    Disliked:

Compared to other sites this was fairly pricey, £28 for no EHU and no toilets or shower facilities.

Was greeted at gate by friendly owner. Shown to our spot, to my delight in front of two gorgeous Shetland pony’s. I Let the owner know I was excited to see the animals, I love animals (we are newbies). He was very helpful with tips to help us with are future adventures. We struggled to find pitches that allow fires, nothing seemed to be a problem here as long as You’re respectful and careful. Would definitely come back. Simple lovely trip just what we wanted. Thank you so much, see you soon 😊

Local attractions

Seeking somewhere to stroll or cycle? You’ll be sorted in the South Downs National Park – with more than 2,000 miles of paths, it claims to have more to choose from than any other of the UK’s national parks. If the 100 miles of the South Downs Way seems a little daunting, perhaps the six-mile Centurion Way or the 11-mile Meon Valley Trail (along a disused railway line) will be more your style.

Horsey types in search of something a little larger than the Shetland ponies can saddle up for rural rides about 10 minutes’ drive away, or head to Hickstead (five minutes’ drive) or Plumpton races (25 minutes) to see the pros in action. If you’re more into golf than gallops, you can take your pick from three courses within a 10-minute drive.

Set off towards the seaside and you should hit Brighton in about 20 minutes or so. There’s always plenty to do along the buzzing stretch of beach, including watersports galore, traditional amusements on the pier and the excellent Sea Life aquarium. It’s worth leaving time to visit the toy museum and poke around in North Laine’s independent shops and cafés too.

Must see

  • Preston Manor (12.0 kilometres)
  • Hove Museum & Art Gallery (12.6 kilometres)
  • Nymans (12.6 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Nymans (12.5 kilometres)
  • Wakehurst Place (17.4 kilometres)
