Birchington Vale Holiday Park: The pod

General

  • Family holiday park set in 100 acres of Kent countryside
  • A 10-minute drive from Margate's beach and attractions
  • Pool, clubhouse, restaurant and family bar

Kent countryside… but more essentially, Kent coast.

Kids who clamour for maximum sandy days while on hol – and grownups who clamour for loads of options to keep small sorts fully busy – will be hugely chuffed at the setting of Birchington Vale Holiday Park, a few miles from the miles of golden sandy beaches of the north Kent coast.

But back to the setting in a bit… For even the fussiest guest (of whatever size) should find something to keep them entertained at this well-equipped family park: there's an indoor pool with flume to splash around at; an adventure playground and an amusement arcade for adventurous and amusing hours; crazy golf; pottery classes; archery... and Loopy and pals as park mascots overseeing the lot and the kids' club.

More? Stroll over to the clubhouse for eats all day long, as well as evening drinks in the family bar, evening entertainment for all the family, and a scenic setting for Sky Sports and to use the free wifi at the bar. The clubhouse also has a shop if you'd rather sort your own dins.

And that setting? Birchington Vale is on 100 acres of Kent countryside, three and a half miles from Margate and within easy reach of loads of family attractions including Howletts Wild Animal Park under half an hour away. Many local attractions lay on exclusive deals for park guests.

Poor show, lacks passion and needs desperate maintenance.03/09/2022

  • Liked:

The pods and the area around was not over crowded. Children loved the pool slide not the pool.
    Bar staff very friendly.
    Drinks were a decent price.
    Shower block was clean.
    Washing up area was clean.
Bbq area was good but could be better with maintenance to the seating area, bbqs and field.

    Disliked:

Pool was small and packed, you couldn’t swim in it. There has been some clever photography on the adverts.
Crazy golf that is pictured in the club house is a different parks. It was charged at £14, 4 out the 9 holes couldn’t be played due to poor maintenance, the course is a concrete and should be closed for health and safety reasons. There is a decent crazy golf 2 miles down the road.
Glass and stones were thrown over the game area and picnic tables. Broken glass was purposely put between the cracks of tables, just slightly sticking out. Very dangerous. Reported to staff straight away checked 2 days later, still the same! Says everything!
Arcade was poorly maintained and machines were broken, ticket based win system but only machine for under 9s was drop ball at 30p a go. The rest were fruit machines for kids to win tickets! Talk about starting them young!
2p machines were clogged, changed machine broken.

Broken glass in kids playing area, footpath going to shower block, again seemed deliberate. I reported these several times and a piece ended up going through a shoe into my littles one foot. It was reported to 4 members of staff, along with the golf course on day 2 and 3. No one did anything. It’s shocking as the broken glass on the playing field is by the football area.
You can forgive the footpath somewhat, but not the children’s play areas and amenity sites. Staff told me they had passed details on to the GM. Who I hold responsible for not doing anything to make sure guest safety is maintained.

Golf course is not complimentary as stated, it costs £10 per person, then £10 per club hire which are kids club, family of 4 was £80. There are better courses at Manston and stonelees for less money.

Tables at the venue were not cleaned we did a test on table 59 and 303 with sauce. We dropped ketchup on an area of the tables and checked in the evening and next day. Still there! Seems petty, but when staff say they disinfect tables after each use but it clearly does not happen we thought we would highlight it specially around Covid.

Pods were not clean with dirty laundry pushed under the bed, ants with no signs of ant traps as stated. Electrical light hanging down from the ceiling, again reported. Single sheath live cables on show. Earth cables not connected to earthing rods. C3 all day long!

The entertainment team try hard. They have poor equipment and trying to be this technology hip hop crew while still stuck in 2000’s. The entertainment manager for the brand needs to do some market research and look at Hobourne and shorefields entertainment. Ditch the technology cheese, sort levels out on the mics or train staff in stage management and sound engineer. You have talented staff that are restricted by cheap props and equipment. Invest in staff and equipment and you will turn it around.

The “cheap” sums it up. The whole place lacks attention to detail and has a cheap feel. But the cost of units to buy at £129999, for a glenmore and £84999 for a ABI, is no different to away resorts, hobourne, and shorefields. The site fees are same range as well. Cost of stay is also only slightly different. We paid £105 per night. That’s not cheap and doesn’t represent the level of service and the state amenities.
This is at most a £40 a night place in a pod, and £60 in a caravan.

If you are going stay here be self efficient and have low expectations. But if you can find another place that doesn’t mislead in their advertising.

Local attractions

There's heaps to do for all ages and inclinations around this part of Kent coast and Kent countryside. All ages should have a hoot at Margate, with its lengthy sandy beach to bask on as well as a scenic harbour which should be your scenic spot for Margate fish and chips.

Also on your list should be the Dreamland Amusement Park, then a jaw-dropped look at an attraction of a completely different vibe but a spectacular sight: the famed Shell Grotto and its huge mosaics made up of over four and a half million shells. Like quite a few fascinating things in humankind's history (aka, Stonehenge), no-one quite knows who put the shells there or why: let the kids enthral you with their increasingly bonkers theories while there.

Family day trips include Diggerland, to drive full-sized diggers; Leeds Castle and Go Ape, and the 28 acres of grounds at Kent Life, the open-air museum and heritage farm park on the bank of the River Medway. All are 50 minutes' drive away.

Canterbury and the Canterbury Tales are half an hour's drive away.

Must see

  • Turner Contemporary (4.4 kilometres)
