  • Small pop-up site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 20-minute drive from Winchester; half an hour from Marwell Zoo
  • Spacious pitches on a working farm; campfire wood for sale
Splendid Hampshire countryside views and plenty of peace and quiet are what’s on offer at Woodlands Camping. This small-scale pop-up site is just on the northern edge of the South Downs National Park about five minutes’ drive south of the village of Ropley. If you’re after clubhouses, arcades and on-site entertainment you’ll want to look elsewhere: this site on a working farm is all about the fresh air, the rural peace and the lovely views. The folk that run the site have deliberately limited the number of pitches available in order to ensure plenty of space for everyone, and kept the amenities to just the essentials of toilets, showers and a washing-up area. There’s a ‘leave no trace’ policy in place here, with guests all encouraged to do their bit to preserve the environment around them (and that stretches to being asked not to feed the farm’s horses, as much as they might bat their eyelashes at you in hope…) Campfires and barbecues are permitted but you’ll need to keep them in a suitable container off the ground; there’s wood available to buy on site from locally managed woodland. Pick up supplies for your barbecue (or picnics while you’re out exploring the countryside) at the village store, or head to the bigger supermarkets in Winchester or Petersfield, both about 20 minutes’ drive away.

The Meadow unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Nice area, lots of things to do locally. Ground was dry (finally!) and the site was not too busy so we had plenty of space.

Disliked: Road to get onto the pitches was very very bumpy and narrow. Facilities were not good - the shower was dirty and unusable. We were also told there was water but couldn’t find it. Owner was not to be found.

The Meadow unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Jason, the owner, is friendly, and was on site most of the time. He asked us to pitch near the facilities, as most of The Meadow has been boggy for a few weeks. The Meadow is slightly sloping, but some areas are fairly level. The site is very spacious site with plenty of space between other pitches. It is very clean and tidy. The site is sometimes peaceful. There are nice views across the valley, and you can sit and watch the wildlife come and go. The facilities (Portaloos) are frequently cleaned. The composting toilets were not in use, so can't comment about them. The shower looks uninviting, but it works well. There is a nice pub nearby (The Fox).

Disliked: Sadly, on two evenings, there was a generator running until well into the evening, which disturbed the peace & quiet. There is nothing mains-powered on the site, so don't know why the generator needs to run for so long. There isn't really any running water on site. There is a water container in The Clearing for campers to take water from. It would be useful to have a proper tap in The Meadow. We went out and bought some 5 litre containers of water. We would advise you to bring your own drinking water, if you can. The Portaloos ran out of handwashing water on Sunday morning. As the owner states in the welcome message: 'Definitely not for everyone.' It's a lovely site, but be prepared for basic facilities.

The Clearing unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Lovely site, in the field we were in there was a picnic bench for each pitch. Nice ad quiet.

Disliked: Shame we weren't forewarned to take wellies, owner said they had cancelled the previous 3 nights for people due to ground conditions but they hadn't offered this to us despite the weather having continued to be awful, given the option we could have changed dates, lack of this meant we could not park in the field we were in meaning traipsing of kit through very wet muddy ground and having to pack up and abandon the last night.

The Clearing unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Jason, the site manger, is a genuinely lovely host and was one of the highlights of my stay. The site was clear of litter and unnecessary buildings. The tent pitches are far away from each other that it feels quite secluded. In the spring/summer months, i have no doubt it will be a lushly green area. Lots of trails and pubs in the local area if you enjoy a good walk. A composting toilet, a simple heated shower and a sink with a water store; all the facilities you need.

Disliked: The parking area for cars could be a little more accessible and there could be some clearer signage to the site from the main road, although the “what3words” were very helpful in getting there, as was the site manager.

The Clearing unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: Jason is a great guy. We got there on a boggy Wednesday & were told that the fields were too wet to use, but were offered another place by the owners workshop! 😆 As we were hell bent on getting out in the van for the first time, we accepted...not the most picturesque location, but Jason made sure we were OK & making do...I have to give 5* simply because of the welcome we had & Jason's help...can't comment on the facilities as we didn't really get to use them!

Disliked: Not a lot...apart from the cr*p weather

The Clearing unpowered grass tent, campervan or trailer tent site

Liked: I visited with my adult son, the QUIET site allowed us to just sit around our camp fire enjoying cooking and a few beers and chatting about our lives. The absence of music was very pleasant as was being able to listen to the birds. We will be back to the site in the near future.

Disliked: Nothing !

Local attractions

That South Downs location means lots of scope for walks and bike rides in gorgeous scenery. If you don’t know where to start, perhaps head for popular spots like the Queen Elizabeth Country Park or Harting Down (both about a half-hour drive) or park in West Meon (10 minutes) for a walk on the 10-mile Meon Valley Trail. There are plenty of options for different days out too: literary fans may like to drop in at Jane Austen’s House (15 minutes), while those with more of a scientific outlook explore the exhibits at Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium (15 minutes). National Trust estates at Hinton Ampner (15 minutes) and Uppark (half an hour) are worth visiting as well. The exotic animals, activities and adventure playgrounds make Marwell Zoo (half an hour) a top pick for family outings, and there are plenty of interesting things to seek out in Winchester (20 minutes) too. For a more relaxed outing, maybe a steam-powered ride on the Mid Hants Railway Watercress Line (15 minutes) will fit the bill?
