General

  • Lakeside site on the edge of the South Downs National Park
  • A 15-minute drive from central Winchester; 1.5 miles from Marwell Zoo
  • Fishing, archery, quad biking and other adventure sports

Lions, tigers and bokibokies await in these handsome Hampshire surrounds – taking the kids to see Marwell Zoo's multitude of beasts is likely to make for some very happy hols indeed. Marwell Activity Centre is within walking distance of this much-loved menagerie and is home to plenty of adventurous action in its own right – head here if you like the sound of oodles of outdoor activities in a pretty lakeside setting.

The team at Marwell Activity Centre have been instructing for more than 25 years so they're well qualified to help you try out sports like archery, quad biking and clay pigeon shooting.

The site lake has a total of nine swims available for anglers (mega-sized carp can be found in its waters, including whoppers weighing up to 45 pounds). Surrounded as it is by trees, it also looks pretty fine (especially at sundown) and is a popular spot with local wildlife.

Marwell Activity Centre has strong all-round facilities, including toilets, showers and wifi. There's also an on-site bistro restaurant that serves up nourishing meals seven days a week. You can set up a barbecue and cook your own grub, too (stock up on fresh meat and veg 15 minutes' drive away at Westlands Farm Shop).

The bar is open between 15/07 and 01/11.

Facilities/activities including fishing, archery, junior quad biking, obstacle course, clay pigeon shooting, aerial adventure are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Hard standing, Staff were lovely, Clean facilities.

    Disliked:

Pretty Much everything else. No activities available, no WiFi, No food on site after 15:00. I thought £35 included electricity hook up but cost extra £4.59,This was our first attempt at campervanning and it totally put us off.

From the manager...

Good morning and thank you for taking the time to write a review. I can only apologise that your first campervan experience with us was not a positive one and I'd like to address your comments in order if I may.

Regarding activities: With the current restrictions as they are we cannot physically run activities outside of our current activity days of Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. This is primarily due to the fact we are required to quarantine all activity PPE for 72 hours before its next use. Bearing in mind the weekend is our busiest time of the week this makes it impossible for us to run activities on a Monday or Tuesday, when you stayed with us. I can assure you we would not be running such a limited number of sessions unless we had to. We are desperate to run more activities but following consultation with various governing bodies and our independent technical advisor it is just not possible at present.

Regarding WiFi: The location of our centre means WiFi is not something we can simply request and have installed. We have been hassling our provider for some time now however again, as I hope you can appreciate, this year any plans to provide WiFi to our site have been put on hold and this is totally outside our control.

Our Bistro opening times: Our Bistro opening times are entirely dictated by the staff we have available and by us prioritising which days we can justify opening based on likely footfall. For example we could open Mondays but it would mean closing another day of the week (when we are likely to be busier). In an ideal world, or on any other year, our bistro would be open 7 days a week until late. Covid has ensured unfortunately that this year that is just not practical or possible.

Our pitch prices were decided based on local competition and we feel are priced at a competitive rate. This is something we will continue to review and adjust accordingly.

As you can hopefully appreciate the centre is not currently running at full capacity, for what I also hope are obvious reasons. As with all activity centres or attractions in the present climate we highly recommend that people phone or email in advance in order to check availability. I hope you stick with campervanning and maybe visit us again next spring/summer when we are firing on all cylinders.

All the best

We can’t really comment on most of the activities due to covid however, what we could do we loved.
The Indoor activity play area was a great break for the adults.
The wash facilities and toilets were well looked after.
The outdoor playground was tones of fun.
Only a short weekend, we could of stayed longer.

    Disliked:

The only dislike is that the washing up facilities behind the reception near the lake walk through only had a cold tap & no shelter so we used the ones near the glancing tents.

Tent pitch size was good and allows 1 car beside tent.
Renting the fire pits for BBQ great...next time will do this on day 1 and not the last day.
Bar and cafe onsite served excellent food and local brewery beer in bottles...great for carryout food and drink.
Grounds were interesting...nice walk by the lake, woods and field with horses.
Some reception staff were very helpful and friendly others less so.
Showers on the other side of the reception road were much better and highly recommended.
Best tip...arrive early to get good pitch

    Disliked:

The dorm block field toilets and shower block were very basic and fresh water taps separate from main block on the other side of the road...why not located on outside of the building??
The wash up facilities only had cold water and were very dirty on arrival....clearly not left clean by previous campers and definitely not cleaned or monitored by staff.
No activities available on arrival...book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Electric hook ups were not close to the pitch...thankfully had to loan 2 extension leads.
Downside of it not raining is the dust from the road covers the tent after 2 day days...guess this is better than striking a wet tent!!

Local attractions

Marwell Zoo (five minutes' drive) has over 140 different species to admire – you can also leave the car back at base and stroll over (about 20 minutes) for a pedestrian safari. Paultons Park (25 minutes' drive) is another perennial fave for family-oriented days out – here you can meet Peppa Pig, crash down log flumes or opt for wanders through a dinosaur-filled forest.

The South Downs National Park has some truly splendid hiking trails, including the 100-mile-long South Downs Way (the trail starts 15 minutes down the road in Winchester). Mountain bikers also have plenty to choose from around these parts – an exhilarating bike track through the woods is on hand in the nearby village of Bishopstoke (10 minutes).

The gorgeous New Forest National Park (25 minutes) is also within easy reach, and one of the best ways to get around is by open-top tour bus. There are three routes to choose from – it all comes down to whether you prefer vistas of heather-covered heathland or coastal explores. Speaking of the sea, beaches like Lepe and Highcliffe Castle (both 40 minutes) are very much worth the journey (make sure to pack jelly shoes and a towel if at all tempted).
