General
- Spacious site in the New Forest National Park, near Fordingbridge
- Half an hour's drive from Bournemouth and Southampton
- Forest walks and bike rides from the site; pub two minutes' walk
A night or few in a national park? How very fab. And it gets even more fab for folk staying at Chapelfield Camping at Godshill, for they can walk or cycle directly into the forest (that’s the New Forest National Park, in case you’d not quite picked that up…) or stroll down to the local pub in a couple of minutes (easy access to pints and pub food – always a bonus).
This family-friendly Hampshire site is up in the north-western corner of the national park, just outside the teeny village of Godshill and five minutes’ drive from Fordingbridge (your nearest source of supermarket supplies and all the bits you’ll need for your barbecue).
If you’ve not managed to pack a barbecue, there’s no need to miss out on alfresco cooking as you can hire a firepit on site (huzzah). A pop-up shop on site keeps guests supplied with milk, bread and other everyday essentials, and you can buy charcoal and logs on site too. Drinking water standpipes are scattered around the site, and there’s a washing-up area with hot water, cloths and washing-up liquid (so no excuses for kids to skip their duties…).
Also on site is a shower block whose six units each have free hot water, a dressing area and a mirror; portaloo-style toilets are around the field, and lit up by night to avoid stumbles. Gadget addicts will also be chuffed to learn of the mobile phone charging point (huzzah again…).

Local attractions
The New Forest’s famed for its ponies, and you may well spot a few as you wander on local paths; if you’d rather get saddled up for a ride, an equestrian centre is five minutes’ drive away. For a supersized equine day out, head to the Dorset Heavy Horse Farm Park (15 minutes’ drive) to meet some rare-breed horses, drive tractors and ride in miniature pony carriages.
If you’ve lucked out with some hot weather (fingers crossed…), take the chance to cool off by scampering over the inflatable obstacles at the New Forest Water Park (10 minutes’ drive) – even if you don’t plan to end up in the water, it’s highly likely you’ll topple in at some point. Those of mature enough years may instead prefer to chill out with a tipple at Ringwood Brewery (15 minutes).
Up for a bit of sea air? Bournemouth’s excellent beach is half an hour away, as are the various sailing and watersports centres in Southampton. Towards the coast but still in the New Forest are Exbury Gardens, Buckler’s Hard historic boatyard and the Beaulieu estate (home of the National Motor Museum). All are about 40 minutes’ drive from the site.
