General

  • Peaceful Pyecombe shepherd's huts on the South Downs Way
  • 15 minutes' drive from Brighton's town centre shops and beach
  • Next to a golf club and stables; pub and farm shop a short walk away

Looking for a comfy base with a touch of luxury to go with countryside views and scenic walks? Waydown Shepherds Huts is a peaceful glamping site in the West Sussex countryside, a few minutes’ walk from the tiny village of Pyecombe and a 15-minute drive from Brighton.

Active times are easily accessed here: the site is sandwiched between a golf club and a horse riding stables, and you can walk straight out onto the South Downs Way or pick up other footpaths for pleasant hikes through the South Downs National Park. The famed Jack & Jill Windmills are less than a mile away, and Devil’s Dyke is three miles away.

The site’s also conveniently located for everyday amenities: within a 15-minute walk there’s a small supermarket, farm shop, café and country pub.

Each of the smart, hand-built huts has comfy beds and a woodburning stove inside, and a barbecue, firepit and outdoor seating for alfresco evenings. A short walk away are the shared facilities: a toilet hut, a shower hut and a kitchen hut that’s been kitted out with a small cooker, microwave, fridge and plenty of crockery, cutlery and utensils.

Elsewhere around the site live resident donkeys Nancy and Dudley – they’re very friendly so feel free to give them a bit of a pat as you pass.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

No cars/motorcycles at the site. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Great location and Andrew was a very knowledgeable host who even recommended the best place to park on our day trip to Brighton.

Our hut was clean and cosy and our children loved being right next to the donkeys and having their own fire pit for toasting marshmallows.

The homemade cakes were delicious and a nice touch.

Even when we had a particularly rainy evening we were happy to play card games inside and have a takeout pizza from the local pub.

Really relaxing and comfortable stay a couple of nights just right. Loved sitting around the fire pit of an evening all the wood etc supplied by the really helpful owner Andrew. My wife and daughter loved the donkeys and my dog chasing a ball around! I would recommend this site if you just want to unwind.

We had a lovely long weekend stay at Waydown Shepherds Huts. The hut was sufficient in size for a couple with a Toddler and Dog, and the location great for accessing walks across the South Downs. We also took a short 10 minute drive to Devil's Dyke for spectacular views and more hiking. The site is a short drive to Hassocks which has an Off Licence and a great Fish and Chips shop. Would definitely recommend.

Had a lovely relaxing stay here! Shepherds hut was very clean and cosy; bed is very comfortable and had complimentary home baked cakes on arrival!
Kitchen is well kitted out with the basics, so we were able to cook up breakfast, and sit out and enjoy the morning sun.
We lit the fire pit (already laid for us, with a bag of logs provided too!) and enjoyed sitting out in the evening.
The communal toilet and shower are both clean and shower is very hot, great after a long walk!
Andrew was very welcoming and gave us lots of tips for local walks/pubs too.

It would have been great to have had a kettle in our hut to make a coffee in the morning, but that would be the only downside.

Great place to stay if you are walking the South Downs, as you are minutes from the path, and a fab place for glamping in style!

We can’t thank Andrew enough for making our weekend away …27/05/2019

We can’t thank Andrew enough for making our weekend away one to remember.

Both working very busy lives, we jumped at the chance to take a few days to relax around a beautiful Shepherd’s Hut - and were pleased to say it exceeded our expectations by miles.

Upon arriving, we were promptly met by Andrew to has a beautiful farmhouse located as the base of the grounds. He gave us a very comprehensive tour of the facilities, which were more than up to scratch.

Having stayed at a few “eco camp sites” over the years, we can safely say the shower, toilet and kitchen huts were the best we’ve seen. Between the hot running water, the fully stocked gas powered cooker or the pristine toilet - we can’t say which was best. Very impressive and immaculately maintained.

The Shepherd’s hut itself was an absolute dream, with everything you’d need to enjoy your stay - including cutlery, plates, cups and towels.

The addition of an indoor wood burner was a lovely touch, albeit one we didn’t make use of as our focus was on the fire pit found outside (where we spent 99% of our time).

Andrew and his wife were also kind enough to leave two little cakes which were a lovely post BBQ treat. Lovely!

Andrew was kind enough to leave us a generous supply of fire wood sources from his own land, which we made keen use of. Leaving us absolutely honking of bonfire smoke by the end of our trip and in no way is that a complaint haha!

Our hut was situated right next to the land that Andrew’s donkeys (Nancy & Dudley) live, so each morning we were met with a few friendly faces to make our breakfast even sweeter. We’d highly recommending asking for this spot as it’s also further from the main road and a bit more secluded.

All in all this was a fantastic break with everything we wanted and more. Thanks Andrew!

Local attractions

If the kids are in tow, Washbrooks Family Farm (10 minutes' drive) has a variety of animals to get acquainted with, as well as tractor rides and play areas; if you’re after something more adult-focussed, there’s wine tasting and vineyard tours at Albourne Estate (10 minutes). Less boozy, but equally scenic, walks can be had at Sussex Prairie Garden (10 minutes), an eight-acre garden surrounded by oak trees.

If you like to be beside the seaside, Brighton is 15 minutes away, with its famous pier full of arcades, fairground rides and snacks – or take to the water for some paddleboarding, kayaking or wakeboarding. Gawp at marine life at the Sea Life aquarium or get a good look at Brighton and the south coast from the British Airways i360, an observation tower on the seafront. A lunchtime stroll through The Lanes should present plenty of food and drink options alongside record shops, vintage picks and bookstores.

Lewes (15 minutes) packs a culture punch thanks to its landmarks, including Lewes Castle & Barbican House Museum, the 16th-century Monk's House, Anne of Cleves Tudor House and the Charleston house, garden and gallery.

Opt for a day at the races at Plumpton Racecourse (15 minutes), or travel slightly further afield to Drusillas Park zoo (25 minutes) or the Bluebell Railway heritage line (25 minutes) for more family frolics.

Must see

  • Preston Manor (6.8 kilometres)
  • Hove Museum & Art Gallery (8.3 kilometres)
