  • No-frills campsite on Cumbrian farmland with far-reaching hill views
  • Three miles from Kirkby Stephen; Barnard Castle 30 minutes' drive
  • Uncrowded site set over 20 acres; dogs, campfires or barbecues allowed
Luxury has its time and place, but so does bivouacking under the stars close to North West England's national parks. If you're intrigued by the latter, pick a pitch at Rookby Scarth Nearly Wild Camping, an all-natural site on a spectacular Cumbrian farm. With minimal amenities, twenty acres of space and excellent views over the local landscape, this site has back to basics appeal by the bucketload for fans of self-sufficient stays. The farm is located in the Eden Valley area, three miles from the market town of Kirkby Stephen and a mile and half from Winton, a small village with a pub and access to the A685. Both can be reached on foot: Kirkby Stephen is about 50 minutes away if you choose to walk it, but you'll be rewarded with a scenic and almost totally traffic-free viaduct path that starts right outside the site gates. The views over crags and hills from base give this place a very wild feel indeed, which is matched by the site's hands-off approach to camping. No flush toilets or showers are available here, but you'll have access to compost bucket toilets with wood pellets. Dogs, campfires and barbecues are all allowed as long as you follow a few simple rules. In return, you and your party have room of space to pitch up in, guaranteed by strict limits on the number of guests allowed on site at any one time.

Local attractions

You'll likely do a fair bit of walking if you come here, as footpaths can be found right outside the farm gates. Some of the North Pennines' many acres of Countryside and Rights of Way land is accessible a few hundred yards away, with popular walks nearby including a tour of Nine Standards Rigg (10 minutes' drive) and strolls along the Coast to Coast Walk towards between Kirkby Stephen and Keld (from five minutes). For a change of scene, it's also easy to get out to Hawes (40 minutes) in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, where waterfalls and Wensleydale cheese are in store. The Lake District National Park is also within reach, with Ullswater (40 minutes), Windermere (an hour) and Derwentwater (an hour) to choose from. Further outdoorsy jaunts should be sought at Deepdale Nature Reserve in Barnard Castle (30 minutes), National Trust-managed Sizergh (40 minutes), Kendal Castle (45 minutes) or in Arnside and Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (55 minutes). And for indoor attractions? Perhaps a movie night at one of the several cinemas in Penrith (35 minutes).
