General

  • Small site in the Cumbria countryside, 15 minutes' drive from Kendal
  • Between the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales, three miles from the M6
  • Activities on site including archery, quad biking and axe throwing

Holmescales Campsite is a small friendly site in the Cumbria countryside, five minutes’ drive from the hamlet of Old Hutton and 15 minutes from Kendal.

This is a handy spot for getting out into the fresh air, as it’s just in between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Park; being a mere three miles from the M6 and four miles from Oxenholme railway station means it’s also a nifty stopover point for those heading to/from Scotland.

Life on site is pretty peaceful: each pitch has a view of the Lakeland fells, and you’ll often spot farm animals and wildlife in the surroundings too. Couples, families and well-behaved dogs on leads are all welcome to stay here, and barbecues and campfires are permitted to enhance those rural evenings on site (although there are several excellent pubs and restaurants within a few minutes’ drive too…)

If it all sounds a tad too laidback, fear not – the folk here run a good set of activities on site (at an extra cost; you'll need to book ahead) so you can challenge yourselves to days spent quad biking, clay pigeon shooting or trying out archery, air rifles, crossbows and axe throwing.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Minimum spacing of 1 metres between pitches.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 5 or more people are not permitted.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

we stayed 1 night,. Liked everything, it was lovely, quiet and the views were pretty nice too. Night sky was just amazing, so clear, beautiful the amount of star's, only wish we took our telescope. Really beautiful place to unwind and kick back. Would defiantly visit again. Also activities if you fancied. No showers only reason i did not give facilities full marks.

Nothing, it was totally awful, but at least we got most of our money back when we decided not to stay, subject to "pitch up" booking fees?

    Disliked:

Everything, the grass was 6 inches long, so all of the pitches on the slight slope, up the steep drive, were in deep grass and were lumpy. There was no hand sanitiser in the 2 portaloo's at the top end, and what was described as a rest area had a dribble of hand sanitiser left, no one was there to greet us, just the quite helpful Kelly on the phone. When their advert states no shower facilities, it also means no washing or washing up facilities either, which was a total shock in these covid times. 3 water points does not make the site user friendly, and a field which has not been maintained should not cost anything!

From the manager...

Dear Ray, when you arrived here at Holmescales, from the off you where rude and aggressive towards me on the phone and I do not appreciate being spoken to in this way especially for no reason or cause. We are contactless check in, its very clearly stated on the right up and on pitch up! this enables us to be covid secure. we do state no washing facilities so I'm baffled as to why, (when you knew this) you booked in the first place? I had such wonderful feedback the day you arrived from our other guests. you complained intensely about the grass because your dog might get wet in the morning but as i mentioned we had, had a lot of rain so unfortunately we hadn't managed to cut the grass before your stay but 6 inches is quite an over statement. We do advertise as wild camping.
