General
- Peaceful half-acre riverside site in Appleby-in-Westmorland
- Five-minute walk from Appleby-in-Westmorland’s station, shops and pubs
- Within 30 minutes’ drive of the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District
Is there anything more soothing than days spent in country-style quietness, listening to a river running by? When peaceful stays of this ilk are needed, trundle along to Bongate Camping, a family-friendly site in the Cumbria town of Appleby-in-Westmorland.
The leafy half-acre site is on the banks of the River Eden, with riverside walks starting more or less precisely outside the site’s gates. For lengthier hikes and strides, the site’s well placed for forays into the Yorkshire Dales National Park, Lake District National Park and North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, all of which are within 20 minutes’ drive of base.
Staying put is highly recommended too, on days when rambling far and wide takes just a little too much effort. When that mood strikes, a five-minute ramble will land guests in the centre of Appleby-in-Westmorland to explore shops, tour the brewery, pick up supplies from the supermarket or butcher, and test out some local eats and drinks in the restaurants, cafés and pubs.
For nights when home-cooked meals are on the cards, private kitchenettes are on hand back on site to take care of the job. Each campervan has electric heating too, so even chillier evenings will be nice and cosy as guests soak up the views of the North Pennines.

Local attractions
The Lake District has plenty to do for all tastes. History buffs will likely want to make tracks for Gamelands Stone Circle, Dalemain Mansion and Historic Gardens, Stainmore Railway Company train museum, Lowther Castle and Gardens, and Askham Hall, all within 25 minutes’ drive of base.
Boaters might be keen to pay visits to Ullswater, 25 minutes away, for trips on the famed steamer, while literary fiends can pay homage to Beatrix Potter and William Wordsworth with pilgrimages to the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount, all less than an hour from the site.
In the Yorkshire Dales, it’s visits to the ruins of Pendragon Castle (25 minutes) and drives to Cautley Spout (35 minutes) – England’s highest above-ground waterfall – that should appeal, while visitors to the North Pennines AONB may be drawn to fishing at Grassholme Reservoir (30 minutes) or hard-hat wearing excursions below ground at the Killhope Lead Mining Museum (one hour).
Explores hereabouts don’t have to be confined to national parks or AONBs either: it’s less than half an hour’s drive to view the arts, ceramics and antiques at Bowes Museum, clamber about the ruins of Egglestone Abbey, stroll around Rokeby Park (check opening dates before travelling), and visit the residents at Teesdale Alpacas. Fancy a more urban-style day? It's 40 minutes' drive to the museums, cathedral and castle in Carlisle.
