  • Off-grid site in a secluded corner of rural Cheshire
  • A 20-minute drive to the edge of the Peak District; 10 to Congleton
  • Eco retreat with campfire areas
Prop your feet up in a peaceful spot surrounded by a proper walkers’ paradise… Broadleaf Forest Adventures in rural Cheshire is that type of place where it’s easy to drift away to a time before emails, smartphones and electric light. The off-grid site belongs to an untouched woodland where there's plenty of scope for roaming, with the edge of the Peak District National Park a mere 20 minutes’ drive away. Having packed a tent and a pair of walking boots, you may well be wondering about other items to bring along. Start off with a trusty torch – this off-grid site has no lighting (aside from the stars and any campfires you've built among the trees). Handy hands-free head torches are also available to hire on site; bundles of logs and kindling are also for sale. The friendly staff can also sort you out with a breakfast hamper and are able to accommodate a wide range of dietary requirements. In terms of practicalities, this site has a back to basics composting loo and a shared kitchen space. To help maintain peaceful vibes in the woods and keep the critters that live there happy, all cars are parked a short walk away. If you do need to make the odd trip back to civilisation, Congleton (10 minutes' drive) is a rather pleasant place to do it. Here there are supermarkets and restaurants, as well as local attractions like a museum, watersports centre and golf course.

Local attractions

Where to go walking first? The Gawsworth Trail, a few minutes' walk from the site, which is a splendid course through the Cheshire countryside? A hike to see the gritstone crags at Hanging Stone (20 minutes’ drive)? A lap of the lake at Astbury Mere Country Park (15 minutes)? It’s likely that watersports might take your liking at this country park, where canoeing, kayaking and raft building are some of your other choices. For some lazier ways to spend an afternoon, you could go for a round at the Macclesfield Golf Club (15 minutes), let your artistic side take over at the Potty Sheep paint-a-pot studio (15 minutes) or have a potter around the Biddulph Grange Garden (20 minutes) to see all the cool plant species. History fans could call into Armoury Towers in Macclesfield (10 minutes) to ogle over a Grade I-listed building… meanwhile, anyone who wants some more action will be well-set with a trip to Alton Towers (40 minutes) or closer by, the Cloudside Shooting Grounds (15 minutes) for some clay pigeon shooting.

Liked: Every thing about it was excellent and pretty well thought out Composting toilet great idea Site dosent have a water tap but plenty of fresh bottled water provided. From a family point of view excellent little secluded secure site there’s only one way on to site and that is over a little bridge only accessible over fields. No Wi-Fi (although good phone signal) Perfect little natural site lots of wood land creatures

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked: Really lovely site which allowed us to disconnect from the world for a few days. Loved the enclosed space with the woodland surrounded by farm land, the swings set up and the fairy doors at the end of the site were just wonderful. We were the only group there and our children could be wild for a few days and they loved it. Den building and fire making galore! Lots of things on site to make it easier, like fire pits with a grill tray, bench seating in a covered area, and a kitchen area with sink etc and some kitchen equipment. No running water but lots of water was left for us - if there's a few of you its probably worth taking extra for hand washing etc especially for little hands that get muddy quickly! The walk over from the car parking area was a bit tricky with small children but they loved the sheep and the trolley was very helpful. Worth it for the relative isolation. The check on videos are also really useful, although we did walk to the wrong gate in the first field so possible a drawn map for parking options and the fields would also be helpful!

Liked: If your looking for a site that gives you the wild camping feel without the fear of being moved on this is for you. Little bit pricey for 1 man/1 night but not many sites offer this kind of camping experience. Pack light as its a 10 minute ish walk from car park to campsite (trolley provided if needed). I enjoyed my stay overall and would stay again.

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked: We were probably mad to go late September but despite the on/off rain we were surprisingly well covered and sheltered from the weather by the woodland and surrounding areas. Check in was simple, and the guided videos the hosts sent prior were very helpful. The hosts were also very easy to communicate with and quick to respond to any queries we had. We had the entire campsite to ourselves when we went which was beautiful. Felt like we were isolated from the outside world and in our own secluded forest. We got to utilise the communal camp area and cook meals and the classic smores over the firepits. There are basic utensils there- pots and pans and a communal cleaning area too where bottled water was provided. The toilet was clean and there was toilet roll, handwash and cleaning products available to hand. Tips: Bring fairy lights/torches/candles.

Unpowered forest floor tent site

Liked: This place is so tranquil. We had the forest to ourselfs and the kids loved it. They ran ferral from 8am until 11am playing on the tyre swing climbi g trees and looking for the fairy doors. There were pits and pans to use on the fire pits. And water alongside toiletries were also supplied. We also purchased the continental breakfast hamper and fire wood wich was all there ready for our arrival 🥰

Disliked: The walk over 2 fields are nit just straight fields. There steep hills when walking with the trolley provided. Woukd have been better if there had been access to drive down to smaller gate to offload and then drive back uo to park the car. Or even a quad rental to attach the karts to
