  • Family-friendly site in village used as location for Emmerdale
  • Well-stocked bar and function room on site
  • 10 miles from the Yorkshire Dales National Park and 11 from Leeds
Spacious pitches, scenic Yorkshire surroundings, proximity to Leeds, and a pint in the Emmerdale pub of the Woolpack all await at Esholt Sports Club, a family-friendly site set in the village used as the location for the TV soap. It's all in scenic countryside on the edge of the Yorkshire village of Esholt, two miles east of Shipley, five miles north of Bradford and 11 miles west of Leeds. Esholt found fame as the original setting of Emmerdale: fans of the show will probably recognise several other village locations while here. (And whether you're a fan or not, a pint at the Woolpack is probably a top idea…) The pitches and facilities of the site are within the grounds of Esholt Sports & Leisure, which has a well-stocked bar and a function room available for hire. Amenities for guests include toilets, showers, a launderette, a washing-up area and a chemical disposal point. Esholt is well placed for visiting heaps of Yorkshire attractions, such as the museums of Leeds and Bradford, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Saltaire and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Absolutely nothing.

Disliked: Disgusting toilet and shower block. 1 toilet. 2 awful showers. 1 sink. Small and pokey. Code too long to remember. Far away from site too. Absolutely nothing on site. Right next to football training ground. Noisy supporters and shouting. Not very private. Don’t bother. £40 for 1 night when you put extras on … Joke. Nothing to do. Field is basically a car park with grass on.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Beautiful little village & close to the Woolpack pub. The locals and the owners of the Woolpack are very friendly & welcoming.

Disliked: Dirty & dated shower/toilet blocks. Only two toilets and a couple of showers for the entire site. No soap or hand towels in the ladies toilet. Advertised a club house which wasn’t open for our full stay (Friday- Sunday) An overpriced site for the facilities. Disappointing because it is a beautiful village & would have real potential if the owners invested some money into the site.

Power optional grass caravan site

Liked: Lots of space on the field but that was the only positive.

Disliked: This is the most expensive camp site we have stayed on in a long while thinking it would be well worth the money with the wifi around the camp site that is advertised and the shower/toilet facilities along with electrical hookup. We arrived about an hour earlier than we could check in as we didnt receive the welcome pack until about 8 hours after we arrived. To be told they were just cutting the grass on our pitch so we sat in the car park for about 45 minutes watching them cut the grass on the top field around the other campers, we were then put onto the football field that has a sign saying no dogs allowed on the pitch but we had booked with a dog... We have been placed seperate from all the other campers right next to the road, which has traffic up and down it all hours of the day and night so was less than ideal with road noise all the time. I am away with 4 young children so wanted somewhere with facilities, the facilities are very lacking with 3 shower blocks where you cannot control the temperature of the water its either freezing cold or scolding hot which is difficult when washing young children. There is a single cubicle toilet for the entire camp site which is supposed to cater for up to 50 pitches up to 6 people so potentially 300 guests at once... There was only us and about 15 others on the camp site during our stay and multiple times we had to wait 15 minutes or more to be able to access a toilet... There are 2 wifi networks for the premise that have full signal in the field but when we asked for the password we were told they are not for our use we are to use the public bt wifi that is only available when stood directly below the club house which has been closed the entire time we have been in the camp site. With 4 young children we booked this site specifically for the wifi and facilities and being away from the road side to avoid the traffic noise. We are extremely dissapointed with the camping here its one of the most expensive pitches we have ever stayed at, when booking i thought id booked for 3 nights to find out mid way through setting up that it was only 2 days (my fault for not double checking), but when it was listed at from £22.50 per night we didnt question the £80 price tag for 3 nights at checkout. So it was basically £40/night to be in a field next to a roadside with 1 toilet that we had to que for and no wifi.... I would compare it to being roadside in a layby in terms of quality of sleep and wish we had just stayed on the roadside on our travels and saved the £80 pitch fee. The camp site charges per child that is in the caravan not sure how it effects them when there is more children in a caravan... There was charges to be added for everything you did including a small awning, wind breakers, side tents or anything you wanted to do within your pitch (which we refused to pay for when booking). The showers didnt have locks on most of the doors meaning people could walk in on you during your shower. Overall it was a very low quality camp site for a ridiculously high price.

Local attractions

As it's Yorkshire, walks among spectacular scenery are all around: make for the Yorkshire Dales National Park 10 miles away to access many miles of trails, as well traditional villages and old market towns. If you're feeling a tad inactive, tour the park by car; if not, other adrenalised activities including mountain biking, horse riding, caving, gorge scrambling or open-water swimming. For towns and shopping, Otley, Ilkley and Skipton are all nearby: Otley (six miles) is a Walkers Are Welcome town and has a number of walking trails that start and end in the town; Ilkley has a toy museum and walks onto Ilkley Moor to see the Cow and Calf rock formation (nine miles), and Skipton (18 miles) is where you'll find the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Steam Railway and barge trips on the Leeds-Liverpool Canal. Four miles away is the famed village of Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with several galleries and exhibitions including works by the artist David Hockney, who grew up in Bradford. There's an 11-day festival in the town every September and the Saltaire Arts Trail arts festival runs every May. The nightlife, shopping, restaurants and museums of Bradford and Leeds are five and 11 miles away.
