General

  • Peaceful smallholding glamping at the ancient village of Adlingfleet
  • Five minutes' drive from the Blacktoft Sands RSPB reserve
  • In a wildlife haven: spot deer at the bottom of the garden

Hankering after an easy rural escape? Have it at Avocet Glamping, on an acre of land just outside the village of Adlingfleet and 20 minutes’ drive from Goole, near the boundary of East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire.

Setting up for a stay here is a cinch, as the luxury bell tent is already kitted out with just about everything you need for your break, including comfy beds, lighting and a woodburning stove to stave off any chills (with a couple of wheelbarrows’ worth of wood chucked in to keep it well fed). Crockery and cutlery are provided to aid your feasts cooked up on the gas hobs – set them up out in the sunshine on fine days or under the lean-to tarpaulin if you need a little shelter.

A couple of minutes’ stroll takes you over to the amenities building (newly added in 2017), which houses a good-sized wetroom with sink, toilet and hot shower along with a washing-up area.

You’ll be sharing this smallholding site with a collection of residents: friendly goats (perennially popular with visiting small sorts) and free-range hens that kindly provide the eggs for breakfast. It’s also something of a wildlife haven, where you may spot deer at the bottom of the garden and flocks of migrating birds overhead.

Stunning sunsets and starry skies are regular features, and as the surrounds are so flat it’s often possible to look across the fields to see a ship passing on the waters nearby while you're stoking up your barbie of an evening.

Absolutely great... Very quiet and peaceful site, our glamping neighbours, a young family were pitched far enough away for noise not to travel (though they were extremely quiet anyhow)

The hut was well appointed with essentials for cooking and was comfortable and warm and the onsite shower/ toilet facilities were clean and water was hot.

Owners (and their goats and chickens) were extremely welcoming, polite and unobtrusive.

Sufficient amount of free firewood and drinking water tap outside the hut

    Disliked:

Nothing... the local area is not much to write home about but we were just looking for a couple of days away in peace. Not a great deal of onsite activities, but again not something we wanted

How nice and quiet it was. Only 1 other pitch there with us. Nice and clean. The owners were very nice and welcoming. Fire pit and wood supplied 👍

    Disliked:

Not being able to park the car nearer to the hut, but a wheelbarrow was provided to transport the gear. The top bunk bed was a bit small and high up which made it awkward to get on and off for my daughter.

The pod was very well presented and come equipped with a double gas hob, grill and all of the bits and bobs to go with it. It also has a log fire inside and fire pit/BBQ outside. They have friendly goats and hens and a gorgeous wooden tree swing. The hosts were very welcoming and friendly.

    Disliked:

The only downfall for us is that the area does not have much to offer, the shops are a 30 minute drive away. However, if your looking for peace and quiet in a beautiful location it's brilliant (just shop beforehand)

We had a fabulous stay in the bell tent, in a beautiful orchard. Kids liked the goats and chickens. We watched the hedgehog and the bats in the evening. Very quiet surroundings, perfect for winding down and getting away from it all. We cooked on the firepit grill mostly, there was also a gas hob and everything we needed to make for a very comfortable stay. A lovely spot run by a very friendly family.

Large private space to ourselves, the cooking facilities outside, clean wash room and toilet.

    Disliked:

Description said comfy beds, I must disagree, it was a thin piece of foam on the floor, very uncomfortable. Felt like we were intruding at times, the washroom and toilet was right next to the house. Drive shared with owners next to their house.

Local attractions

If you’ve come to these parts for open-air wanderings, off you trot with your binoculars to RSPB Blacktoft Sands (five minutes’ drive) or to roam around the farm museum and wooded gardens at Normanby Hall Country Park (half an hour), before cooling off at its splash pad.

Those who like to combine culture and country walks may like to set forth instead for the splendid Yorkshire Sculpture Park (an hour’s drive), or the National Trust estates of Nostell Priory and Parkland (50 minutes) and Temple Newsam (an hour), where the gorgeous gardens were designed by none other than the niftily talented Mr Capability Brown.

Nippers demanding a bit more activity? Steer them off to the Madtrax off-road karting and paintball centre (15 minutes) or set forth on a walking safari at Yorkshire Wildlife Park (45 minutes). Boat trips from the Yorkshire Waterways Museum (20 minutes) and a watery day at Hull’s huge The Deep aquarium (45 minutes) are other options for kid-friendly days out.
