Highside Farm: Wood chips path and steps up to the pod

General

  • Quiet glamping pod two miles from Middleton-in-Teesdale
  • In the North Pennines, 25 minutes’ walk from the Pennine Way
  • Walk to shops, cafés and takeaways; views over Teesdale and Lunedale

With far-reaching views over Teesdale and Lunedale in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the luxury glamping pod at Highside Farm is as scenic as it is peaceful. Graced by spectacular dark skies for stargazing, surrounded by plenty of wildlife and tucked away from the rest of the campsite, the pod has a private and peaceful atmosphere, whether you’re after a romantic retreat or a peaceful getaway.

After spending the day trekking along the 268-mile Pennine Way, which is just 25 minutes’ walk away from the pod, snuggle up and stargaze (weather permitting) on the porch, which is completely undercover and provided with snuggle blankets. The decking has a bistro table, chairs and a dining set for alfresco evenings.

If it’s a little chilly, why not light the firepit and listen out for the local owls? The site supplies your first basket of logs and a starter pack for free. If you require more, they can be purchased on site (please don’t bring your own firewood).

Named after one of the local reservoirs, the Grassholme luxury glamping pod sleeps two people. It has been fully equipped with a kitchen sink, breakfast bear, full-sized oven, two-ring induction hob, integrated fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle, toaster and all utensils, pots, pans, mugs and glasses. There’s coffee, tea, sugar, cooking oil, vinegar, salt and pepper to get you started.

Simply put, this is an excellent getaway for those who want to sit back and relax and explore the local walks. Go birdwatching at the local nature reserve, Hayberries Nature reserve (five minutes’ drive) or cycle the day away too. The market town of Barnard Castle is 15 minutes’ drive away and Middleton-in-Teesdale, around half an hour’s walk away, has shops, cafés and takeaways.

Other features inside the pod include a two-seater sofa, a 30-inch TV with satellite, a USB charging point and wifi. There’s an ensuite shower with a hairdryer and heated towel rail (towels are provided) and a comfy double bed (bedding is provided).

There is nothing not to like here and I would highly recommend!! Lovely hosts, the scenery and views are amazing. If you are lucky enough to have a clear night then you will see a beautiful sky full of stars. Lots of walks and reservoirs nearby. Middleton is only a 5 min car journey where you can stock up on food/groceries, have a pint or meal at the local pubs. The pod is well equipped with everything you need. A lovely place to relax, no children allowed which for me was much appreciated.

Welcoming hosts, good communication, found the time to talk about the local area and their journey in creating the site. Waking up to amazing views and taking in the view of the stars at night. Attention to detail in and around the pod was spot on, all cooking utensils to hand, there were no facilities in the pod missing. The addition or a BBQ for an extra £10 meant we could cook in the mornings and evening taking in the view on the decking area. The fire pit is a good addition, and the provision of initial fire wood meant we could sit out as the night drew in and take in the stars and peace and quiet. Looking for a place to stay not surrounded by people this was ideal. The local area is good to walk and explore.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike but a good addition to the site would be a shop to buy essentials such as milk, bread, meat, vegetables, locally produced to support local businesses, maybe an honesty shop. We were able to walk to the local shop which was around 40 mins each way but this may benefit the less able. All that said the local shop is only 5 mins away if travelling in a car. If you do venture out walking be prepared that taxis don't really operate on the area.

Thank you Helen and Mark for a most wonderful stay! The accommodation was fabulous and one of, if not the best, we have stayed in. Every detail has been covered and location was just perfect, one of the most peaceful and tranquil we have been to. As hosts, Helen and Mark could not have been more welcoming and assured that our stay was superb! There are also plans to make the view even better by creating a natural water feature that the luxury camping pod overlooks. We cannot fault any part of our stay and will be looking to book a longer vacation to explore more of the beautiful surrounding area. Saying that we could have just stayed in the pod 24/7!
