Pitches

General

  • Friendly family-run site in the nature-rich Norfolk Coast area
  • Three acres of grounds a mile from the seaside
  • Logs for sale and wifi available; three miles away from Hunstanton

Net yourself a nifty little niche in the Norfolk Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with a trip to The Poplar's Campsite, a quiet family- and dog-friendly option.

The coastal position of this place, about a mile from said waters, certainly is key if you’re after a hol bounding around all the beaches in the area – of which there are many. Some of the most sought-after stretches of sand are at Thornham (five minutes’ drive) and Brancaster (10 minutes), plus a pub is close by on foot (10 minutes’ walk) for pints once you’re done with paddling.

A bus station is a short walk away too should you be touring the area by public transport, perhaps heading to the town of Hunstanton (10 minutes’ drive). When not travelling, lean back next to the campfire on the park’s three acres of land; logs are for sale on site to keep the blaze crackling and wifi’s available too so you can fiddle with your phone outdoors as long as you like.

Not that you’ll be wanting to spend much time on electronic devices during a stay here – the Norfolk Coast area has oodles to get stuck into, from birdwatching to boating. Forays on foot are also fab: hop it to Holme Dunes (10 minutes) for sandy strolls or saunter around Sandringham’s wooded paths (20 minutes).

Really liked the campsite at The Poplars, it was well run, and the owners were friendly and helpful. The caravan was a bit dated but clean, with very comfortable beds and two bathrooms. The site was within easy reach of beaches etc, and plenty of eateries nearby. We would definitely like to stay there again next year.

This is a basic site in a quiet area. The pitches are generous and reasonably flat. There weren’t many other campers there. If you like being one with nature, this is somewhere for you. Both the owner and his son were extremely friendly. It’s a good country mile to the sea, with lots of dunes. The pub in the village provided us with a lovely ploughman’s.

    Disliked:

There are very few hookups. We paid £20 without hookup which I think is quite pricey. The elsan point is something else. Vile. And we couldn’t find a grey water point so ended up emptying onto the field near the elsan point.

Great location for exploring the North Norfolk coast. Quiet site with simple but clean facilities and brilliant showers! Very friendly welcome from the owners. Our 1 night planned stay ended up as 3 due to a breakdown! But really pleased we had to stay longer as gave us time to explore....it was great to cycle to Heacham via the back roads and then back up the coast via Hunstanton.

Relaxed atmosphere. Very quiet location...not overly commercial or corporate.just as I remember camp sites when I was young - about 40 years ago. Enough space on the site for kids to play..lovely views of horizon .Well done The Poplars for remaining true to camping spirit.very good place for helping us all to switch off..its a dark sky part of the UK so saw full moon and shooting stars.Owls heard hooting at night. Local pub in village 10 min walk ... friendly and again not renovated and so maintains its character...

Local attractions

The bird is the word here – avian creatures aplenty flock to the Norfolk Coast, including to Holme (five minutes’ drive) and Snettisham (20 minutes). An RSPB reserve full of marshlands, reedbeds and freshwater lagoons that lure in avocets, marsh harriers and pink-footed geese is in Titchwell Marsh (10 minutes) too.

Linger around here during wanders along the wide beach looking out across The Wash, another protected part of Norfolk, as well. More into watersports than walking? Hunstanton has a variety of pursuits to pick from, including paddleboarding and windsurfing (plus it’s also a prime place for pottering along the red and white cliffs if you haven't had enough of roams). Rainbow Park is round here too for fans of fairgrounds, while its next-door neighbour, the Sea Life Sanctuary, is a must-visit for seeing the seals, penguins and otters.

Fancy activities that are more aristocratic in theme? Check out the queen’s gaff, Sandringham (20 minutes), or mosey to manor homes like Narborough Hall (40 minutes) and the 12th-century Castle Rising ruins (25 minutes).

Must see

  • Sandringham (14.8 kilometres)
  • Houghton Hall (16.6 kilometres)
  • Holkham Hall (17.6 kilometres)
