  • Peaceful, well-maintained park in the grounds of a landscaped garden
  • Close to the A50; a 20-minute drive from Alton Towers
  • Barbecues permitted; two pubs within a mile's radius
Fancy treating yourself to a sumptuous stay in the grounds of a 17th-century farmhouse? Park Hall Farm in the Staffordshire village of Church Leigh is a quiet site within easy reach of the gardens and high-adrenaline thrills of Alton Towers, the UK's biggest theme park. Head here for peaceful times and space to set up all your holiday accoutrements – the plot sizes are generous, meaning you can look forward to a bit of extra comfort and privacy. For food, you may like to grill your own grub on a barbecue or head out to one of the two pubs located within a mile of the site. For the nearest supermarket, drive 10 minutes up the road to Cheadle. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join you at Park Hall Farm – you can be pretty sure they'll appreciate the walks to be had around the site and in the surrounding countryside. For proper outdoor adventure over rugged terrain, make tracks for the Peak District National Park (about 40 minutes' drive).

Liked: Great pitches , large pitch size

Disliked: The toilets were very far away no signs to show where they are and no lighting at night , the ladies toilet/shower block was old and could do with updating and smelt damp , neither the gents or the ladies were cleaned in the 4 days we were there , when we spoke to the person who runs the campsite he said it's bound to smell if the doors closed and if you don't want to use the ladies shower use the men's just make sure no men are at the urinals , he said some places charge for using showers and we wouldn't be able to find anywhere better for £28 a night, but there are much better places for less

From the manager: Our Toilets are cleaned daily. The windows in the shower rooms should be left open to allow ventilation but they keep being closed by guests. So na shower room is going to smell damp when the ventilation is shut off.

Liked: Flat pitch close to power. Peaceful (faint hum from A59 but not a problem). Great to find that didn’t have to walk far to toilet block despite was said in previous reviews.

Disliked: From reviews, I was expecting large garden and walking tracks for my dog but narrow roads with fast driving cars meant they were not safe to walk on.

Local attractions

Once you've ticked off Alton Towers (20 minutes' drive), take intrepid kids go-karting at the National Forest Adventure Farm (30 minutes), Go Apeing at Cannock Chase (35 minutes) or pony trekking at the local riding stables (15 minutes). Drayton Manor (50 minutes), another top-tier theme park, is also doable for the day if you're staying at Park Hall Farm. (Kids turned away from the biggest rides at Alton? Drayton Manor has more rides accessible to kids under 120 centimetres.) Action-packed activities not pushing the right buttons? Chilled garden explores are on the cards at the Trentham Estate (25 minutes), where there's a mile-long lake, a cascading weir and acres of fab foliage. Other floral displays can be seen at Shugborough Hall (35 minutes), a stately home with walled gardens and a hands-on farm museum. Last, but emphatically not least, is Chatsworth House (an hour and 10 minutes) with its 25 square miles of ornamental grounds. For other ways to sample a slice of the high life, spend a while watching horses clearing hurdles at Uttoxeter Racecourse (15 minutes) or settle in for a soak at Moddershall Oaks Country Spa Retreat (20 minutes).
