  • Peaceful dog-friendly motorhome site for adults and children over 14
  • A 35-minute drive to Cannock Chase Forest; 30 minutes to Drayton Manor
  • Barbecues permitted and stall selling eggs on site; rural walks nearby
Partial to peaceful picnics and pedals along a former railway track? Or perhaps hilltop ruins, followed by a swing around the treetops in Cannock Chase Forest? You’ll be primed for such a stay at The Cottage Motorhome Park. Three miles from Stafford Castle and 35 minutes’ drive from Cannock Chase Forest, this dog-friendly site may be tiny, but it has a mighty load of peace. This is rural Staffordshire, so very little will disturb you here, unless you count the birds that visit the site’s mature trees (a nice source of shade, by the way). Mornings might start the sunny side up here, literally, as the site has a wooden stall selling eggs at the entrance to the site and you’ll have permission to get them frying on a barbecue if you wish. Perhaps you’ll want to practise your game face too, as the site has a well-equipped games room available. When you’re ready to venture off site, there are cycles along an old railway line on the 14-mile Stafford Greenway, picnicking galore at the Stafford Castle’s hilltop ruins or many an eatery in Stafford, all within 10 minutes’ drive of the site. Should you rather let the food come to you, there are takeaways that deliver to the site. That way, you can spend your waiting time freshening up in the toilets or shower block, taking the dog around the dog walking field or even squeezing in a quick rural walk.

Powered grass and gravel motorhome site

Liked: Lovely small site with the added bonus of a games room with free pool and darts. Wash rooms are clean and spacious with the use of a washing machine and tumble dryer if needed. As in previous reviews there is signage in the washrooms but I am assuming the people offended by them are the ones not willing to abide by them. Owners very helpful and showed us round the site and explained where everything was.

Liked: Nothing

Disliked: The notices taped to the walls in the toilets/shower rooms showed a deep ignorance towards the customers using their campsite and left such a sour taste in our mouths, that we did not use any of these facilities out of contempt. All paragraphs are written in full as per the notices, using capital letters, spelling & punctuation exactly as they appeared on the notices. Notice 1) PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF YOUR MOTHER DOES NOT WORK HERE. Notice 2) This includes everyone, if you can't keep our toilets clean!! Then please use your own toilet. Notice 3) PLEASE NOTE ALL OUR SHOWERS ARE FOR LADIES & GENTLEMEN ONLY. PLEASE DO NOT USE TO WASH YOUR BLOODY DOGS AS THIS BLOCKS THE DRAINS UP. SO PLEASE NO DOG WASHING. THANKS Notice 4) THIS SHOWER ROOM IS FOR THE USE OF MULTIPLE MEN & LADIES. SO IF YOU MAKE A MESS, WILL YOU PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELVES, WE DONT WANT TO HAVE TOO SPEND OUR TIME CLEANING UP AFTER OTHER PEOPLE. ITS YOUR MESS SO PLEASE CLEAN IT UP. YOU DONT PAY ENOUGH TO BE CLEANED UP AFTER! THANKYOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION. CLEAN IT UP!!

From the manager: Well well well, there is always one isn't there and this couple are the ones, well thanks for not using our facilities out of contempt. Last year we had 1500 visitors this is the second complaint from a very small minded couple. The notices are there to be seen Notice 1) this was meant to be humorous Notice 2) we had a couple who were staying longer and they never cleaned the toilet so we were just saying if you can't clean our toilet after use, then use your own in your van. Notice 3) all our showers are cleaned frequently, we are a very dog friendly site, but some were walking there dogs in a muddy field and then washing them in our showers, the dogs hairs were blocking the toilet waste pipes as we are on a septic tank. Just a simple easy sign to understand. (well by most people) it is not there to offend anyone. Notice 4) A simple easy to read sign, just requesting people to clean after themselves, because we are not always here to clean up after them. We are not ignorant, we also don't want to show deep ignorance. So my suggestion to this very ignorant couple is maybe you have eaten something that has left a sour taste in your mouth. But maybe they prefer facilities with showers full of dog hair and other people's trimmed bits and poo stained toilets. The signs are there to help everyone who visits our site to feel comfortable and welcome. We are also very approachable, so i ask? 'Why did they not come and tell us instead of telling others, we would of removed the signs whilst they were here. What is our motto? (It's just as easy to be nice, as it is to be nasty) Some people hey!! They just love to tarnish. Or should I say try to tarnish. Thanks for the visit Kindest regards Kev & Wendy

Liked: Sue was very friendly and helpful. Site was well laid out and plenty of facilities for the number of guests. Everything was clean. The leisure room was a bonus. Very peaceful and slept better than at home. Some have complained about the signs. It was explained how it had caused them a lot of trouble with people not using the bathrooms properly, so we could understand. Perhaps they could be written differently to appeal to peoples better nature and people will not then take offense. We would certainly visit again whatever.

Local attractions

Get your pedal on, because there are cycle-easy spots in Cannock Chase Forest (35 minutes’ drive). Whether you’ve got your own bicycle or you’re making use of the bike hire there, you’ll have your pick of leisurely forest routes and slightly madder mountain biking courses for those of you who are more seasoned. Plus, you’ll also have the choice to take to the treetops on the Go Ape courses, in real monkey style. While animals are on your brain, Amerton Farm (25 minutes) will bring you right up close, as the farm runs alpaca and reindeer experiences. Other businesses call the site home and that includes a pottery studio and yoga studio. Along similar lines, Stafford Showground (20 minutes) is a multi-purpose venue that will surely get the party going with events throughout the year. Two top spots to keep up the pace are Drayton Manor Theme Park (half an hour) and Alton Towers (50 minutes), and those of you are craving somewhere a little more regal to wind down after all the thrills of the rides may find just the place in Shugborough Hall (25 minutes), a Georgian mansion house and walled garden.
