- Peaceful site at a riding centre 10 minutes' drive from Oswestry
- Close to Offa's Dyke Path and 25 minutes' drive from Chirk
- Bring a horse for hacks, manège sessions and masterclasses
It can be tricky to get away on hols if you’re a horse; most hotels won’t have you to stay (and keycards are tricky with hooves…). So here’s some excellent news for anyone that has an equine pal in need of a break: they’re most welcome to join you on a stay at Moorehouse Farm, a rural Shropshire site 10 minutes’ drive from Oswestry.
It’s not terribly practical to bunk up with your horse, of course, so the equine members of the family get a nice comfy space over in the livery yard where they’ll be well looked after by trained experts. There are plenty of chances to spend quality time together though: site staff can sort out masterclasses, manège time, guided rides and hacks around the farm’s 27 acres or beyond onto quiet country lanes and bridleways.
Not bringing a horse along? There’s still a warm welcome for you here – bring a well-behaved dog instead if you like, or travel without any animals in tow (there are plenty to spot nearby, including the badgers that have set up setts on site). Fill your days away from the farm taking walks, borrowing mountain bikes or visiting the castle and aqueduct in nearby Chirk. Follow up on all this activity by finishing the day with a meal at one of the pubs within five minutes’ drive or a barbecue back up at the farm.

In reply of your comments, this was the week it had rained heavily for several days, making it impossible for the grass to be mown, it is usually mown every week.

We wholly dispute your comments, as the toilets were cleaned every morning, and the toilet rolls replenished, there was not thick dust on the toilet dispensers and the bins emptied. there are hand sanitisers outside each toilet door. I am at a loss as to know what more you expect !!!

Coming from Oswestry, turn right before reaching Trefonen, at the signpost for Candy and Llansilin; the site is on the right-hand side just over a mile down this road.
Give your rump a rest after all the riding by getting out for a walk nearby – this part of Shropshire is most scenic and has plenty of footpaths to stroll along for views, including the Offa’s Dyke Path, which runs for 177 miles along the border between England and Wales.
For an alternative way to see some of the local sights, head to Chirk Castle (25 minutes’ drive), where you can glide around 480 acres of grounds on a Segway. Wander around the 13th-century castle and its gardens on foot as well if you prefer, and perhaps take a walk over to the Chirk Aqueduct, part of the Llangollen Canal World Heritage site.
Like a bit of art as you amble? Head to the British Ironworks Centre (15 minutes) to see various artisans in action and seek out more than 100 metal sculptures dotted around the gardens.
Time for a sit down? Take a ride on the Cambrian Heritage Railway from Oswestry (10 minutes) – trains run on summer weekends, but if you’re in town on a different day it’s still worth stopping in to see all the memorabilia at the museum.
