General

  • Peaceful site at a riding centre 10 minutes' drive from Oswestry
  • Close to Offa's Dyke Path and 25 minutes' drive from Chirk
  • Bring a horse for hacks, manège sessions and masterclasses

It can be tricky to get away on hols if you’re a horse; most hotels won’t have you to stay (and keycards are tricky with hooves…). So here’s some excellent news for anyone that has an equine pal in need of a break: they’re most welcome to join you on a stay at Moorehouse Farm, a rural Shropshire site 10 minutes’ drive from Oswestry.

It’s not terribly practical to bunk up with your horse, of course, so the equine members of the family get a nice comfy space over in the livery yard where they’ll be well looked after by trained experts. There are plenty of chances to spend quality time together though: site staff can sort out masterclasses, manège time, guided rides and hacks around the farm’s 27 acres or beyond onto quiet country lanes and bridleways.

Not bringing a horse along? There’s still a warm welcome for you here – bring a well-behaved dog instead if you like, or travel without any animals in tow (there are plenty to spot nearby, including the badgers that have set up setts on site). Fill your days away from the farm taking walks, borrowing mountain bikes or visiting the castle and aqueduct in nearby Chirk. Follow up on all this activity by finishing the day with a meal at one of the pubs within five minutes’ drive or a barbecue back up at the farm.

Nothing - we booked through this site, turned up to locked gates and the place deserted! Called the number off the site to be told they have now closed & moved and pitch up shouldn’t have taken the booking!! I was sent an email (which went to my junk folder) saying the booking was cancelled due to problems with their toilet & shower block (clearly a lie) which I obviously didn’t see as who actually checks their junk box?!… Surely a phone call would have been better to ensure I was aware before travelling for a couple of hours!! Absolutely poor service, not that it matters as the place doesn’t exist anymore! But I wouldn’t book through this site again if they take bookings for places that no longer exist!!

Fabulous site. Working livery so horses everywhere! Sloping fields but we found a flat bit! The views are just amazing. Speechless! Lots of walks. Very dog friendly. Toilets were spotless! 😉 Will definitely be back. Thank you for lovely stay.

Camping field is on a slop and the grass was long and in desperate need of cutting. We were fortunate that we were to be able to get on to the field. However, we did witness a caravan and motor home that was not able to get on to the field and had to pitch up either side of the entrance to the field.

The WC and showering facilities were good and owner/ staff were polite, the camping site however was poor. We were left with the impression that the camping business was just an add on to the horse training/ stabling and B&B business.

From the manager...

In reply of your comments, this was the week it had rained heavily for several days, making it impossible for the grass to be mown, it is usually mown every week.
the rain had also made the gateway very slippery, and people without 4 WD found it difficult to gain traction. all through the season, we have not had this problem, therefore we arranged for these vehicles to park on the stoned area of the site.
We have spent a great deal of money on electric hook ups, yard lighting and a top of the range toilet and shower facility, so we feel that it is unfair for your to say that the camping facility is 'just an add on'

Amazing scenery and lovely walks, we were able to leave the motorhome there and explore.
Keith was very helpful in letting us stay on hard ground as the field was too wet, we stayed for the weekend. Loved Boris the peacock and seeing the horses.

    Hot showers

    Disliked:

The lack of regular cleaning was frightening considering the pandemic, there was thick dust on the EMPTY toilet roll dispensers and a dirty mop bucket left at the end of the shower block. No toilets had bins or sanitary bins, the main bin was full with bags beside it. All the pitches were sloping and the ground was uneven with clumps of grass and sand. The £10 a night charge for electric was excessive considering we've stayed on luxury sites for less than £30, where the facilities were far superior.

From the manager...

We wholly dispute your comments, as the toilets were cleaned every morning, and the toilet rolls replenished, there was not thick dust on the toilet dispensers and the bins emptied. there are hand sanitisers outside each toilet door. I am at a loss as to know what more you expect !!!
Perhaps I should sit outside the toilets and clean them each time somebody goes in...

Quiet farm in countryside location, friendly hosts and helpful. Newish showers/toilets all clean. Plenty of space for our campervan and although the tents were in a different section up the hill our family were able to camp next to us. Track around the edge of the farm to walk horses was good to walk the dog too.

Local attractions

Give your rump a rest after all the riding by getting out for a walk nearby – this part of Shropshire is most scenic and has plenty of footpaths to stroll along for views, including the Offa’s Dyke Path, which runs for 177 miles along the border between England and Wales.

For an alternative way to see some of the local sights, head to Chirk Castle (25 minutes’ drive), where you can glide around 480 acres of grounds on a Segway. Wander around the 13th-century castle and its gardens on foot as well if you prefer, and perhaps take a walk over to the Chirk Aqueduct, part of the Llangollen Canal World Heritage site.

Like a bit of art as you amble? Head to the British Ironworks Centre (15 minutes) to see various artisans in action and seek out more than 100 metal sculptures dotted around the gardens.

Time for a sit down? Take a ride on the Cambrian Heritage Railway from Oswestry (10 minutes) – trains run on summer weekends, but if you’re in town on a different day it’s still worth stopping in to see all the memorabilia at the museum.

Must see

  • Powis Castle & Garden (21.8 kilometres)
  • Chester Castle (41.1 kilometres)
  • Cheshire Military Museum (41.1 kilometres)
