site

General

  • Family-run smallholding site in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Spectacular views over Wenlock Edge and surrounded by walking trails
  • Play park with swings, climbing frame, trampoline and toddlers' area

At Walnut Cottage Caravan Park, a peaceful family-run site 10 minutes’ drive from the small town of Much Wenlock in Shropshire, finding the dream getaway doesn’t have to be a tough nut to crack.

Nine miles from Wenlock Edge and the meadows and woodlands of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Walnut Cottage is a paradise for ramblers and adventurers. Heaps of walking routes, cycling routes and riding trails – many of which are part of the Shropshire Way circular – crisscross the area, so pull on those walking boots, don your bike helmet or climb into the saddle and explore.

For the little legs struggling to keep up, a play park back on site will buoy moods – let the kids burn off some energy on the swings, climbing frame and trampoline (or in the toddlers' area if they're still mini).

Feeling peckish? Fire up the barbecue and pile it high with supplies from the convenience store in Much Wenlock, then tuck in by the campfire. Friendly dogs are welcome on site, so don’t forget to toss Rex a bone – just make sure he’s leashed first.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Only 110-volt heaters are allowed on site.

Please note that the site is in the process of building a toilet/shower block; work will be taking place mainly on the building's interior, and noise will be kept to a minimum.

Excellent site for children with large play area and secure entrance24/10/2020

We were looking for a quiet site after travelling down from Scotland.
You enter through security gates and this adds to your feeling of security.
The site would be excellent for children as a small ‘theme’ part for them to play.

The only downside was the toilet block which whilst clean was not really acceptable today.

Fortunately the owner was busy building a brand new toilet block and when completed would transform the whole site.

Friendly host. Wayne was fantastic. Beautiful views. Small shop on site for essentials, play area for the children. Secure location as has electronic metal gates. Level pitches for the tent. Options to purchase fire pit and wood for reasonable costs, and access to water from an outside tap.

    Disliked:

Not a dislike, they are currently undergoing some building work. They are upgrading and building new toilet and shower blocks. The old one is a bit run down but it has a functional shower and toilet. It is a bit on the old side and does need replacing. But is functional and was fine by us.

Wayne (the owner) was extremely welcoming and supportive as it was our second time using our caravan. Consistently showing willingness to help and ensure our stay was enjoyable. The grounds were kept well kept daily and facilities were acquitt and to of high level of hygienic standards which was a plus due to the current situation.
He’s even gone to the extent of building a full fledge shower block and laundrette unit that is currently in the works. Electric and water were all serviced making it a very easy stay.
Dedicated grounds for dogs were a plus as it made it easy to let the dogs out for the toilet.
Finally was plenty of playground facilities for the kids for them to enjoy and a farm which the kids loved.

Wayne the owner was extremely helpful as this was our first time camping. There are currently some building work taking place but this is going to provide new shower, toilet and washing facilities.
The old facilities are very outdated (hence the need for new) but are kept extremely clean considering their age.
The rest of the site is kept beautifully and pitches are a great size.
Very secure with gated entrance so always felt our children were safe.

Childrens play Park was really lovely with a great range of play equipment, could just do with a little spruce to fix a broken swing and trampoline.

All in all a very welcoming and great stay, will definitely be back again.

Local attractions

This part of Shropshire is brimming over with history. Start with an exploration of the ruins and reconstructions at the Wroxeter Roman city, Viriconium, 15 minutes’ drive from Walnut Cottage Caravan Park, then jump forward a thousand years or so for something more recent: at the birthplace of the industrial revolution in Ironbridge Gorge, 20 minutes away, wander through Blists Hill Victorian Town, learn about the history of iron in the Coalbrookdale Museum and cross the first cast-iron bridge in the world.

There are plenty of stately homes and (formerly) impregnable fortresses nearby: the 13th-century Stokesay Castle is 30 minutes from Walnut Cottage, and the spectacular Attingham Park, Wilderhope Manor and Benthall Hall are all within 20 minutes of the site.

The local towns are no slouches either: Church Stretton, the only town within the Shropshire Hills AONB, dates back to Norman times; Much Wenlock is home to a precursor to the modern Olympic Games, and the Wenlock Olympian Games are still held every year; and Shrewsbury was the birthplace of the Origin of Species’ Charles Darwin.

For a break from history, hire a raft for a tour at Ironbridge Gorge, take to the slopes at the snowboarding and skiing centre in Telford, or get muddy at Severn Valley Quad Trekking, all within 35 minutes of Walnut Cottage.

Must see

  • Much Wenlock Priory (6.5 kilometres)
  • Enginuity (12.0 kilometres)
  • Ironbridge Gorge Museums (12.2 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Wilderhope Manor (5.6 kilometres)
  • Attingham Park Estate: Cronkhill (10.1 kilometres)
