Seating around the campfire

  • Family campsite with great views in the Vale of the White Horse
  • A half-hour drive to the Cotswolds or central Oxford
  • Communal firepits with seating on site; firewood for sale
You’ll be in for a real rural experience when you stay at Oxford Oak Camping – this simple family-oriented site is just behind Farmer Gow’s farm park and shop in the Oxfordshire countryside. Back at base, pitches are pleasingly spacious, flat and surrounded by hedgerows for a bit of shelter. Simple facilities are provided in the form of toilets and showers, and campfires are heartily encouraged by the provision of communal firepits with seating around them. Firewood can be purchased on site to help such evenings along. With splendid views of the Ridgway and the Uffington White Horse there’s no mistaking the fact that you’re really out in the countryside here – but that doesn’t mean you’ll be cut off at all. There’s a pub about half a mile away in the village of Fernham, and it’s very easy to get to the A420 (the main Oxford-Swindon road) close by for your days out in the likes of the Cotswolds, Oxford and the North Wessex Downs.

Bell tent (six person)

Liked: The tent was a great size and beds really comfortable. The owner was super helpful and friendly. The campsite was relaxed and not over crowded. Fire pits provided per tent. Lovely little touches in the tent such as sun flowers and lamps. Toilets and showers were beautifully clean. A really enjoyable stay.

Liked: Oxford Oak is a bit of a hidden gem, the website doesn’t give much away so we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived. One of the only campsites in the vale of the white horse it even offered a view of the white horse from our pitch which was pretty special. Small and secluded with high hedgerow meant that it was a secure and family friendly space for small children to explore and play safely. There are a handful of glamping tents to the one side of the field and space for about 30 tents on the rest of it if packed tightly around the perimeter. There are communal fire pits which are encouraged however we were given a portable fire pit on request as we didn’t want to leave the small children in the tents on their own. It was a very welcoming and gentle site, dogs on leads are allowed however there were none there that we noticed. Everyone was very respectful of the noise curfews and we slept very comfortably. The toilets were very clean and we noticed that the hand towels were changed daily (our son was very excited to discover that they even had a toddler seat for him) The showers were warm and clean and the washing spaces well maintained. Bonus points if you’re a military aircraft enthusiast as Fairford airfield isn’t far away which means that military planes fly over the site on occasion too.

Disliked: The only thing we would change would be that there was more of a crossover between the farm, the shop and the campsite. They all feel very separate from each other. It may be more appealing to some families if the farm offered a discount to those that are camping on site or allowed access to their children’s park facilities.

Liked: Returning for a second visit this summer. Field was immaculate, toilet and shower facilities clean and very well maintained. Love the fact I was allowed a late departure due to being a solo parent. After staying here with friends in June, I knew it was the perfect place to take my son for one last adventure before school starts again! We had plenty of space for games and a fire pit for the evenings!

Disliked: Nothing!!!

Liked: Very lovely little campsite. Facilities were always clean and tidy. The shower was boiling hot which was a positive! The pitches were a very good size. The little fire pit was a nice touch. Overall, the experience was great and we will definitely come back again!

Disliked: There were only 2 toilets and 2 showers for the whole campsite. This wasn’t a problem was it wasn’t busy when we stayed, but I imagine to may be a bit of a wait if it was busy.

Local attractions

This is some splendid countryside, so come along prepped for walks or bike rides, either in the immediate surroundings or a little further afield in the North Wessex Downs (10 minutes’ drive) and Cotswolds (half an hour) Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. If you’re not sure where to start, the Uffington White Horse (10 minutes) and the area around Burford (half an hour) are good bets. You may spot some native wildlife as you roam, but for something more exotic you’ll need to head to the Cotswold Wildlife Park & Garden (half an hour) or to meet the snappy residents of Crocodiles of the World (25 minutes). It’s certainly not safe to get in the water there, but it is at Cotswold Water Park (35 minutes), which has a whole host of watersports as well as a beach area and fishing. For a bit of history and culture, you can’t beat a day out in Oxford (half an hour), punting along the river, touring the college quads and visiting the Ashmolean Museum. There are lots of scenic villages and towns to see up in the Cotswolds too – places like Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold (both 50 minutes) may be some of the prettiest places to see in the whole land.
