  • Peaceful rural location on the edge of Medbourne
  • Riverside gastro pub nearby serving meals
  • Barbecue, garden furniture; Sunday café serving a tasty breakfast
If you're pitching up here, it's fairly certain you're in the market for some countryside rest and relaxation? Sorted: Rural Relaxing is in the village of Medbourne in the Welland Valley, a setting that the friendly team reckon is one of Britain's best-kept secret spots. And it has a pub nearby – result. As its name might hint, this is a firmly rural site: the owners have taken care not to make it look commercialised in any way so that guests can settle down and soak up Leicestershire countryside and make themselves at home with the barbie, comfy garden furniture and the sunny terrace for alfresco eats… Elsewhere on site, the decked Potting Shed café serves a tasty breakfast and hot drinks, pastries and other treats on Sunday mornings, and there's an open-air social area with a firepit (free to use, with logs available to buy on site). During the high season, pizzas are available on Saturday nights. And that pub? It's a stunner for real ales and gourmet food by the riverside (booking essential). The village shop and post office at Medbourne can sort some supplies; elsewhere, you'll find most of what you need in the nearby towns of Market Harborough, Uppingham, Stamford and Oakham. Rural Relaxing's amenities include a ladies' toilet and shower, plus a separate one for the gents.

Stags and Hares bell tent

Liked: The sight was beautiful, with lovely views.

Disliked: The air bed was flat, I pumped it up but woke at midnight on the floor. There was no one to speak to on the site. Thankfully I had taken two spare beds incase I needed them. Also we had adults in the bell tent next door who kept me awake from midnight until 4:30am. They were shouting loudly and were swearing etc.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We blew up the airbed for you after you informed us that it had gone flat, indeed we replaced it with a new one. I am sorry that this happened. Regarding the people next door - this should have been reported to us - we are contactable every day by telephone, we come to site daily and in the village when we are not on site, we were on site Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings running the coffee hut so could have easily spoken to the guests next door - everyone is strictly informed about the quiet policy and I am sorry to hear you experience this - we are a family site, as such have quiet time rules from 11pm until 7am and could have spoken to them for you but on this occasion we were not informed so couldn't assist you. Our rule states that guests will be asked to leave if they are noisy. I see you will visit again and I hope that next time you will find everything less disturbing.

Romance bell tent

Liked: Breakfast and coffee offered in the mornings. Lovely staff and good quality food.

Disliked: Stayed in a teepee tent and a cushion mattress on a wooden frame on the floor was uncomfortable not very romantic. The wooden bench outside could have done with a lick of paint was old and falling apart. The toilet was at the opposite side of the field

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. The bell tent description clearly states air beds and futons, we invite you to bring your own bedding as it is a pre-erected tent. I am sorry that you were uncomfortable on the bed. Thank you for your feedback on the benches, new benches have been re-ordered and we are still waiting for them to arrive. The map on the site shows where the loo and shower facilities are, it's a tiny site under 1 acre so it's not far to walk, & most people love the fact that the loos are not "right on top of them", otherwise it would be a composting loo next to your tent where there is another issue of smell. I hope you visit again, please consider the safari tents next time which have proper beds in them.

Gin and Bare It 2 bedroom safari tent

Liked: Wonderful kid-friendly site. Very secure so kids will tend to all group together and play across the site. This is great for grown-up relaxation.

Disliked: The stocks of firewood etc are not renewed often so people had to bring their own.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay, we aim to be as rural as possible and I'm glad you found the site safe & relaxed. The stocks of firewood are regularly made, regrettably, the man who supplies this last week had problems with a vehicle which meant we became short of stock very quickly. This has been remedied today, often others grab more than is necessary and infact today have found much surplus around the site. I look forward to welcoming you again.

Powered grass tent or motorhome site (small)

Liked: Easy access, great field, lovely location very positive, lovely little morning cafe on a Saturday and Sunday.

Disliked: The facilities for showering and using the toilet are great but what let this site down for us personally is unless you are up and showered before 9am it’s just a little bit embarrassing. The great little onsite cafe opens at 9am- lovely food and staff. It attracts cyclists and others to come to the site which in itself isn’t a problem it’s just you have to walk through all these people enjoying their breakfasts with your change of clothes and shower stuff to get to the shower block and then share the toilets.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Hello thank you for your review. I am pleased you enjoyed your stay with us and will visit again. The cafe area opens at 9am and we've not had any negative feedback in the past about this and I was surprised to read this. Indeed we have planted trees to screen this just to make the cafe area defined from the camping field, I guess it's only really "embarrassing" if you go to the showers in pyjamas/onesies rather than being dressed, so my apologies that you felt uncomfortable. I will look at the seating to see what can be changed. Delighted to see you enjoyed the breakfast. Hope to welcome you back one day.

Local attractions

This is a rural base to make the most of Leicestershire, whether you want to munch your way around the county's market towns or cruise around its castles and historic houses. Cute villages are all around, along with their pubs serving yet more Leicestershire pub food. Have a leaf through the guidebook on site to plot your comings and goings; miles of walks and bike rides are in the area too. In summer, get lost in Wistow Maze (20 minutes' drive), a labyrinth of maize set across eight acres on an award-winning attraction. Also 20 minutes away, have a wander around Foxton Locks to see its boats and its museum… or go fly fishing in the waters of Lutterworth (40 minutes). If you're on holiday with the kids, they'll likely like Market Harborough's Mini Mischief (10 minutes), a huge adventure play centre for all ages including dedicated baby and toddler zones, or Aqua Park Rutland (30 minutes), a wipe-out waterpark on Rutland Water. For less hectic days, try fishing, walks or sailing at Pitsford Reservoir (half an hour) or take a stroll round the smart grounds of Rockingham Castle (15 minutes).
