  • Small luxury site in the village of Lea, close to pub and shop
  • 10 minutes' drive from Ross-on-Wye and the Forest of Dean
  • Easy access to the A40 and bus stops in the village
A rural retreat with gorgeous valley views by day and some stonking starry skies by night – how fab. That same rural retreat with easy access to the main road and bus stops, and a short stroll from the village shop and pub – how doubly fab. This splendid setup is at Greenacres Glamping, a small friendly family-run site in the little Herefordshire village of Lea, 10 minutes’ drive from Ross-on-Wye. Comings and goings are pleasingly easy here, as it’s just off the A40 and close to the village’s bus stops (excellent news for folks who’d like to leave their wheels behind for a bit). A small shop is in the village, and the pub’s got the added bonus of an attached curry restaurant to spice things up a bit. Those with outdoorsy activities on their action plan are in luck around here: it’s only around a 15-minute drive to hit walking trails in the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or canoe trips on the River Wye. Folks who’d rather roam on horseback need only trot next door to saddle up at the local stables for a lesson or a hack. Fancy an alfresco cookout? Barbecues and campfires are both welcome, and there’s a little labyrinth to lose the kids in for a bit while you get the flames going. Other amenities include wifi, a washing-up area, a fridge-freezer and a heated shower block with individual cubicles.

Osprey geodesic dome

Liked: Absolutely beautiful, we stayed in osprey that was very clean and modern. The log burner was excellent, the adjoining shed with small kitchen area is a brilliant addition. Views are outstandingly beautiful. The toilet and shower block are very well designed and modern with underground heating. I would highly recommend this site.

Buzzard bell tent

Liked: Fabulous site, we will certainly be returning to stay again. Next time will be in one of the yurts or domes! Star gazing at night was amazing, also listening to the owls.

Disliked: Nothing against the venue, however on this website (pitch up) there is a picture of the bell tent we stayed in advertising that it has a log burner. This was one of the main reasons we booked, but the buzzard bell tent and robin DO NOT have log burners inside. We were quite upset by this as we had taken lots of wood for this purpose and we have a young baby too. Intending to keep it nice and toasty inside.

Merlin yurt

Liked: The outside kitchen in the hut with everything you need. The outside seating, picnic bench and deck chairs. Plenty of outside space between. The bed was well comfy.

Buzzard bell tent

Liked: Very clean accommodation. Lovely site and excellent toilet, shower and wash up facilities. Good parking. Fantastic individual kitchen units, well equipped and outside covered seating area with large bench. Decent wifi. Close by a wonderful village shop that sells almost everything!

Disliked: Had thought we were going to have a real log burner in the bell tent - there is just electric log burner effect heaters now. Worked well but not as fabulous as the real thing. We were notified of this shortly before our visit, however, so we were aware.

Really nice site, but choose a dome if you want space.

Falcon yurt

Liked: Showers, loos and kitchen very good (though the shower tokens ran out on our last morning which was annoying).

Disliked: There were no shower tokens on our last morning. The yurt was very nice but a lot smaller than it looked in the pictures. Not really possible to relax or eat indoors in bad weather.

Buzzard bell tent

Liked: Greenacres was a perfect setup and location for a 3 day stay in the Buzzard tent. My daughter (5 yo) absolutely loved it, the shower block, tent itself and the cooking sheds were excellent. Will stay here again 100%. 5/5.

Local attractions

All creatures great and small are on display in the local area: The International Centre for Birds of Prey (15 minutes’ drive) is the place to see owls, vultures, eagles and other big birdies spread their wings, and there’s flying on a smaller scale at the Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (20 minutes). Call ahead to Briery Hill Llamas (15 minutes away) and you can take a walk with the woolly ones before popping back for cream tea. The Forest of Dean (15 minutes away) is a fab place for a walk or a bike ride; you can also glide along the trails on a Segway tour or swoosh through the air on the ziplines and canopy trails at Go Ape (25 minutes away). Nippers who need a bit of encouragement to take a woodland walk may like the magic-themed trails at Puzzlewood (25 minutes). Ross-on-Wye (10 minutes) and Symonds Yat (20 minutes) are your go-to places for fishing and canoe trips on the River Wye. The riverside Wilton and Goodrich castles, near Ross, are worth a visit too.
