  • Small and smart glamping site 15 minutes' drive from Ross-on-Wye
  • Forest of Dean and River Wye canoe trips within a 15-minute drive
  • Barbecues provided; three excellent pubs within walking distance

For many folk, there’s nowt finer in life than a day spent rambling through gorgeous rural scenery, followed up by a country pub dinner (and possibly a pint or two…). Such sensible sorts will most likely be highly approving of days spent around Darnells Farm Luxury Glamping, 15 minutes’ drive from Ross-on-Wye.

The scenic surrounds here are a pretty part of Herefordshire (and one that’s easily accessed, being but a mile from the M50), with walks and bike rides galore nearby. The Forest of Dean, Malvern Hills and Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within a 15-minute drive for planning numerous such outings; for a change of muscle power, you might like to wend your way down the Wye in canoes from Ross-on-Wye.

Need a little incentive to propel you along your chosen route? If the promise of a pub dinner would do the trick, take your pick from three excellent hostelries within walking distance of the site. Legs out of steps for the day? Stick around on site to get the barbecue going or cook something in your kitchenette.

The swish setup here means that lots of little extras are taken care of: each unit has its own ensuite bathroom, underfloor heating to warm chilly toes, and a good pile of fancy towels and bed linen. There’s also a TV and sofa in each one for times when your outings have left you in need of a bit of comfy chillout time.

A couple of pot holes in the access road to farm could do with filling, wouldnt put me off going again though.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for taking the time to give us such a wonderful review. Yes, the potholes on the road do need filling, we have raised it with the council a couple of times, hopefully they will get filled soon..

Such a warm welcome, even though we were a little early! Beautiful setting, very peaceful and definitely ‘off the beaten track!’ The pod is everything you would need, great to find one with en-suite facilities. The honesty shop has charcoal for the bbq to buy and a good selection of traditional board games to borrow!

We loved it, excellent site and facilities in beautiful countryside.18/08/2019

We arrived at this stunning site which is within a working farm at the end of a country lane. The site has been considerately developed to include a hardstanding carpark behind the farm at the top of the path down to the safari tent.

The Safari tent is large and has adequate space to comfortable sleep 6 (there were 4 of of us) and the views are of unspoilt countryside, with the peace and tranquility apparent immediately.

The facilities in the safari tent were brilliant (two flushable toilets, a shower, 240v sockets, toaster, kettle, running hot water, etc) and it was spotlessly clean on our arrival.

The shops were a short car drive away (3 miles) and there are pubs within walking distance, and everywhere we visited was lovely in this beautiful part of the country.

If you are looking for something different to a hotel or cottage stay, but with the feel of a 4-star hotel (duck-down duvets, cutlery and crockery, toiletries, etc) then this is somewhere different that is definitely worth a try.

Local attractions

The Forest of Dean (15 minutes’ drive) is a fab place to start if you’re looking for scenic strolls. If you can’t pick from the many miles of trail on offer, perhaps pick one with a theme: the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail is a popular one for arty types, and the Highway Rat Trail for families on foot. If you’re after a bit more adventure, shin up into the trees at the Go Ape treetop park (25 minutes’ drive) or don protective gear for caving and climbing outings from Coleford (half an hour).

Paddling a canoe is another fave around these parts: hire your vessel in Ross-on-Wye for watery sightseeing – depending on how far your trip takes you, you may spot Goodrich Castle and Symonds Yat Rock as you go (and if not, you can drive to either in around 25 minutes).

If it’s time for a bit of respite from all the activity, plan more peaceful days at the International Centre for Birds of Prey (15 minutes) or Wye Valley Butterfly Zoo (20 minutes), or take a beery tour of Hillside Brewery (15 minutes).

  • Goodrich Castle (11.2 kilometres)
