Jenners Barn Pop-Up Camping: Back to basics grass pitches

General

  • Back to basics site on a peaceful Cotswolds farm
  • A 20-minute drive from Cirencester; half an hour from Witney
  • Views of the river Coln; a mile from a nature reserve and café

Watch jet planes gliding over RAF Fairford and trek the Thames Path at Jenners Barn Pop-Up Camping, a gorgeous Cotswolds meadow that's practically begging to be bivouacked on. This back to basics site is part of a working farm and home to a friendly herd of cows, so you're sure to get a good taste of country living during stays here.

This site is well-suited to self-sufficient types who thrive in natural surrounds. Green, grassy and rural views abound in this quiet spot, where you're more than welcome to set up a barbecue. Luxury it ain't – you'll want to bring a trusty torch to help you get around after dark, and there are no showers for guests' use (although regularly cleaned loos are available).

Creature comforts are still available close by, though – it's about a mile's walk to a farm shop or to a friendly independent café (there's a play area here where the kids can let off steam while parents fuel up with a caffeine fix). Outdoor adventure is within walking distance, too – peaceable spots like Whelford Pool Nature Reserve and the Thames Path are both a short stroll away.

Well-behaved dogs are welcome.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Lovely location, well kept toilets and washing up area, child friendly and plenty of nature for exploring.

    Disliked:

Set pitches would be nice as we had people arrive late in the evening pitch very close to us and play music for several hours into the night.

Size of field (lots of room) and facilities (though limited) were clean and well maintained.

    Disliked:

Website mentioned weekend food/drinks trucks which weren't there.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review. I’m afraid we have to have a decent number of campers to make it worth the food truck coming - hopefully they will be back next year. Best wishes. Leonie

It was quiet, secluded, plenty of space, dry, the facilities were in decent order. The pitch cost just 10 a night and the only thing that might have been better would be the fact that the bar was closed - although I imagine Covid-19 concerns might have played a role.

Big fields with plenty of space to pitch. Ground was even. Good location near Fairford (interesting planes coming in to land!) and Lechlade (good for canoeing). Facilities were as described; simple but adequate - worth going up to the building for the toilets there. Lovely food served in the evening.

Local attractions

Animal-themed adventures beckon at Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens (15 minutes' drive); for a slightly more niche safari, check out Crocodiles of the World (25 minutes) – this last one's fairly self-explanatory, but it certainly makes a kooky addition to the rather proper market town of Witney (half an hour).

Cirencester (20 minutes), aka the capital of the Cotswolds, is home to Cirencester Park (one of the best examples of geometric landscaping in Britain), a well-known antiques and collectables market and the Corinium Museum, a place that delves deep into the town's Roman roots. On the other side of the Cotswolds, Cheltenham (35 minutes) is a splendid spa town where you can stroll around grand and graceful squares or take a dip at Sandford Parks Lido.

Ambling around the dreaming spires of Oxford is far from out of the question – the ancient university town and its world-class Ashmolean Museum are 40 minutes away by road. Counterbalance all that learned stuff with a spot of retail therapy – there are some great shopping options at the city's Westgate centre, while big-brand bargains can be snapped up at nearby Bicester Village (50 minutes).

Must see

  • The Buscot and Coleshill Estates (7.9 kilometres)
  • STEAM - Museum of the Great Western Railway (14.2 kilometres)
  • Uffington Castle, White Horse and Dragon Hill (17.6 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Buscot Old Parsonage (5.0 kilometres)
  • Buscot Park (6.9 kilometres)
