If this sounds like just the holiday ticket, seek out Severn Valley Touring Caravan and Camping Site in the village of Awre, less than a five-minute walk from a traditional cider producer and a 10-minute drive to lovely Newnham-on-Severn. The park's also in an easy position to get to, as it's a mile and a half off the A48 Gloucester to Chepstow road and 25 minutes by car from the Wye valley.

Park up, pitch up then sit – cider in hand – to take in the gorgeous views from here ( the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills are visible on clear days) and watch birds soar through the skies: the site's surrounds are home to creatures like kestrels, buzzards and red kites. Early risers might get a sneak peek of hares around the grounds at dawn too, and barn owls have been spotted in neighbouring fields during dusk in this ancient area once listed in the Domesday book as a royal hunting ground...

Whatever time of day or night, visitors have access to well-designed amenities like a purpose-built toilet and shower block, as well as covered washing-up facilities and a shower room that’s accessible to people with disabilities.

Off site, the Severn Way is about half a mile away for roams beside the river. Time your visit right (check timetables online) to get a glimpse of the Severn Bore phenomenon, the surfable waves that roll right through the water at certain times of the year...

Also love the homemade apple juice, not to mention Severn Cider 5 minutes away! A great place to try out our campervan for the first time.

Stayed in one of the lovely Shepherds Huts for a couple of nights, we weren’t disappointed! Absolutely lovely and tranquil setting surrounded by great views plus sheep, donkeys and chickens. Accommodation was excellent, spotlessly clean and well stocked with all that you need. The shower block and toilets were also spotless and well presented too.

If you want a quiet break from it all, can’t recommend highly enough... definitely stay again.

Had a great 3 nights here with my 10 yr old. The family Shepherds Hut was really well equipped and very clean.
Site very peaceful and friendly. Spotless throughout and water always hot. Lots to do nearby:
We stopped at the Bird of Prey centre on the way to the site which is well worth a visit (30 minutes drive)
Went on 2 great walks (there are laminated maps to take with you) along the Severn. Stunning and gorgeous in any season I would think. The small village of Awre is pretty and the churchyard interesting if you
like that kind of thing(!) We do...
There is a cider farm next to the campsite but you’ll be pleased to hear my 10 yr old didn’t drink any.
We also drove to Lydney Harbour for a look round which is under restoration and really interesting. On one day the rain was torrential so we went to Taurus Crafts just outside Lydney & did some Christmas Shopping. The Chocolate Shop sells lovely chocolate 😆
Also had a treat Chinese takeaway from The Golden Phoenix in Lydney which was delicious.
Plenty to do and fantastic scenery. I plan to go back with adult company and do some longer walks.

Local attractions

Less than 20 minutes’ drive from the Forest of Dean, this is a solid base for ticking off tourist attractions, taking part in outdoorsy pursuits and shopping in market towns. The Dean Heritage Centre is 15 minutes away for planning wooded walks and more ambles can be had at the National Trust’s Westbury Court Garden in around 10. Other landscapes to lope around in the local area include Lydney Park, a 17th-century country estate with Roman ruins, within a 20-minute drive.

If kids start to tire of staying on solid ground, they can take on an adventure course above the treetops at Go Ape (15 minutes away); other spots to suit small sorts include the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail (20 minutes) and the Forest of Dean Adventure Park (a 30-minute drive).

Above-ground adventures complete, seek subterranean times at Clearwell Caves a 25-minute drive. Or learn about flying critters at The International Centre for Birds of Prey (half an hour away) then glide about at your own leisure in a canoe hired from Symonds Yat (within a 35-minute drive).
