Forest Oak Farm: Picnic Area, Lake and Dog Exercise Area

General

  • Friendly family-run farm estate next to the Forest Of Dean
  • Within easy reach of Symonds Yat Rock, Go Ape and Puzzlewood
  • Views of valley, lakes and fields and heaps of space for dogs to play

Woof woof... This peaceful lakeside retreat is a veritable pup's paradise: not one, but two large off-leash exercise areas and lead walks, a lake to paddle in and heaps of long countryside walking trails to take their humans out and about on.

Near Lydney in Gloucestershire, Forest Oak Farm is a friendly dog-centred farm estate that lies between the banks of the River Severn and the Forest of Dean, and very warmly welcomes dog owners and their canine compadres to come spend some time there; since opening in 2012, the site has been expertly cultivated by the Dodson family – who also run a fab dog training centre on the farm – to provide a scenic spacious site and a welcoming atmos to all.

Set out over 20 acres of fields, lakes and woodland filled with mature trees, this is a well-equipped park with plenty of 10-amp metered electric hook-ups and a bathroom block (added for the 2020 season with toilets, showers, accessible facilities and a laundry room). Foodwise, you can take your barbecue bits down to the smashing lakeside picnic area for an alfresco feast by the water. Two large dog-exercise areas were added to the site in 2018.

Off site, there are heaps of good places to eat out around in Lydney and a little further afield around Blakeney, Alvington, Parkend and Clearwell – just ask the Dodsons about their favourite dog-friendly food joints.

The way the site was played out there was plenty of open areas and places to walk. Although the main toilet block was closed due to to the Corona virus the temporary showers and toilets were kept impeccably clean. The staff were very helpful.

Owners friendly and helpful, did best to accommodate requirements. Secure dog exercise fields and nice view of lake. Can walk around land and woodland so plenty of space to explore.

    Disliked:

Constant noise from fast road. Very loud noise, think a generator from early evening until about 9pm on Monday night. Following morning digger started and machinery noise constant until about 10pm (May have been farm work nearby). Ugly view from our pitch of temporary portaloos and showers plus various building materials lying around. I know temporary, but showers went from scalding to cold every time pressed button, didn’t regulate temperature. Friday night had screaming children from one of the lodges running around the whole campsite, family just let them run amok. I was very concerned two young children wandered alone next to unfenced fishing lake, lots of water dangers for unattended children. Late arrival after dark of caravan that parked next to us then strange loud thumping started, appeared to be boy playing football inside caravan until about 10pm! Not the camp owners fault that inconsiderate campers booked, but ruined last night of holiday and I couldn’t wait to leave next day

From the manager...

Thank you for your review of our site, but I am a bit concerned that you rated us so low yet during your stay myself wife and daughter all spoke to you at length and yet you never mentioned anything to us, which would have given us the opportunity to rectify any issues.
Living in the Country electrical supply is expensive (£82,000) and yes a generator did run on Monday night as we do dog training in the barn.
Once again being in the Country we are surrounded by fields and farmers have to work to prepare the ground and harvest crops.
I am confused at your comment about an Ugly view from pitch 6 as it is angled towards the lake, and the temporary toilets would have been nearly behind you, but then glad to read that you had a nice view to the lake.
Your concern about the shower is totally unjustified as we ask all caravan and motorhome people to be self contained as the showers and toilets are only for the tent people. When you arrived you did say to us that you would not use the showers or toilets, as you were concerned about Covid. Obviously that was a lie.
We do not fence the lake and do have in our rules that children should be supervised at all times, had you told us at the time we would have had a word with the parents.
The late night arrival we can only apologise for, but again you should have said something to us.

Now to answer you score ratings:
Location 4:
It is a same that you did not enjoy the beautiful Forest of Dean and its glories scenery.
Value for Money 4:
Not sure what you expect for £19 per night, but try parking for 24hours in a motorway service station, you will pay a lot more.
Quality of Accommodation 6:
Well I can’t understand why you rate your own accommodation at this this. You did not stay in our accommodation. Perhaps you need to change your caravan and that will improve things for you.
Facilities/Activities 6:
With respect to facilities due to Covid we have had to close the toilet block and very clearly state that customers should be self-sufficient. Our camping kitchen, which is the only unit open in no way, deserves a 6 and I would really like to know what you expect from a brand new purpose built unit.
Customer Service 8:
We do pride ourselves of giving a good customer service, but we have learnt over the years that you can’t please everyone. Not sure what else you expected?
Child friendliness 4:
I can only assume this rating is due to the open lake. If you took the time to look at what activities we have on site for children you would have seen that we don’t have swings, swimming pool or club house and if that is what you wanted then you should have choose a site with those facilities.
Cleanliness 8:
Thank you, we do make every effort to make sure the site is clean and tidy, but as we are also a working unit sometimes there is a few things lying around.
Wi-Fi 2:
We do not advertise Wi-Fi as we are in the Country and the best speed we can get on a really good day is 3meg and that often drops to below 1 Meg. We would love to offer a superfast Wi-Fi but until the Government decides to do this area then we are stuck. We do get a good Wi-Fi signal via mobile phone, which is what most people use now. When on holiday I don’t use Wi-Fi as I can live without it as I enjoy looking at things in reality not on a little screen.

Finally thank you for staying with us and we are sorry that your stay was not totally enjoyable, good luck for the future and hope you can find a site up to your expectations.

Local attractions

Forest Oak Farm is in a splendid spot for easy access to the Forest of Dean, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the wider Gloucestershire, south Wales and south-west England areas.

Adventurers can test their mettle on the high ropes course at Go Ape, five miles from base, and over at Puzzlewood, eight miles away, there's a walking trail that meanders through an ancient 14-acre forest filled with towering trees and rugged rock formations. At Clearwell Caves, right next door to Puzzlewood, explore its sprawling natural cave system and learn all about the forest's 4,500-year iron ore and ochre mining history.

The Forest Of Dean, around half an hour's walk from the park, is full to the brim with woodland walks, cycle tracks, lakes and secluded valleys. Be sure to bring your binoculars, because the forest is home to wild boar and deer that can (and should) be admired from afar.

The smashing Symonds Yat Rock is a mere 25-minute drive away from Forest Oak Farm and provides visitors with plenty of fun outdoorsy and sightseeing opps; take one of the many waymarked trails that link it with the River Wye and a number of circular walks into the surrounding forest, visit the ancient Iron Age hill fort and – if you're there between April and August – point your trusty binoculars towards the nearby cliffs to spot the peregrine falcons that nest and hunt around them.

Canoeing, kayaking, paddleboarding and mountaineering are available around the village of Symonds Yat too.
