Set in a perry pear orchard on an organic cattle farm: that sounds almost poetic. As are the views from the spectacularly scenic little place of West End Farm Campsite, set in the horseshoe bend of the River Severn on the edge of the peaceful Gloucestershire village of Arlingham, and adjacent to the river with easy access to the footpaths of the Severn Way.

A rather smashing pub is within easy walking distance too: the Red Lion freehouse (owned by the village, hurrah) with tiptop locally sourced food, real ale and regular events like quiz nights and folk nights – all just the ticket after a peaceful pedal or serene stroll along the river paths or region's quiet flat roads…?

West End Farm has a toilet block and chemical disposal. Both barbecues and campfires are allowed on site.

This is a lovely little site tucked away in the very picturesque village of Arlingham. It looks like the site owners have recently put little bushes such that it's easier to pick a pitch and social distance, this was a nice touch. There are some lovely walks, we walked around the whole "curved" part of Severn way. The two pubs in the area are nice and were open (social distancing and only outside seating). There are toilets (toilets are officially closed so we brought a porti-potti) and a troth with hot running water to wash dishes. It's everything we needed the site to be!

Disliked:

Not the sites fault as we could of contacted the owners with the issue but there was another party playing loud music for most of Saturday. I believe we just happened to be in the direct line of sound so we just moved pitches such that we couldn't hear it anymore. The rules of the site do say no loud music but we didn't want to upset the party seeing as we've all been locked down for so long and they just wanted to enjoy themselves!

Liked:	So remote and open. Really lovely place to get away yet with really good facilities, liked that it was so open there wasnt a reception or anything, just find your way a little. It was great.
Disliked:	The map by the Red Lion pub would be useful just on the inside of the grounds, and if it was there, oops, totally missed it so maybe a more obvious place for it!

Local attractions

West End Farm Campsite's local village is Arlingham, also in the River Severn's horseshoe bend and just off Junction 13 of the M5. The area around the village is fab walking and cycling land, of public footpaths, riverside ambles and flat peaceful roads – all set among first-class mid-Wales scenery. (Don't know where to start? Ask at the Red Lion for details of their hare, salmon, cattle and skylark wanders.)

A couple of miles from the farm is the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal, running between Sharpness and the old docks of Gloucester. It's a pleasant place to while away a few meandering hours, particularly around Patch Bridge, close to the Wildfowl Reserve at Slimbridge which has the world's biggest collection of captive wildfowl.

Other local options are Berkeley and the Edward Jenner Museum, where the clever chap first figured out vaccination, and Berkeley Castle, where poor old Edward 2 met his grisly end.

Gloucester Cathedral is nine miles from the site; a little further afield are the Norman castle of Goodrich and the Tudor National Trust-managed house of Newark Park.
