Lots of greenery

General

  • Spacious family-owned site in the Cotswolds
  • Five minutes' drive from Cirencester and 25 from Cheltenham
  • A 15-minute drive from Bibury and the start of the Thames Path

A getaway full of fab scenery, peaceful wanders and historical streetscapes… and bringing the dog along for the journey? It’s a cinch at Mayfield Park, a family-friendly and family-owned Gloucestershire site five minutes’ drive from the market town of Cirencester and the pretty village of Bibury.

This is a top spot to use as a base for explores of the spectacular Cotswolds. Overlooking the Churn valley, the site has easy access to plenty of local walks and scenic villages – just ask in reception for recommendations – and the long-distance Thames Path (so long it’ll take ramblers all the way to London) starts about 15 minutes’ drive away for lengthy treks.

Exploring without needing to use feet or pedals is simple round here too: the bus route for Cirencester and Cheltenham passes the site and there’s a stop about 100 feet from the entrance; otherwise pile everyone into the car for the five-minute ride to Cirencester or the 25-minute canter to Cheltenham.

Be sure to head back to the site in time to catch the sun setting over the fields, then settle in for an evening of barbecues as canine pals stretch out in the grass. Want a break from cooking? Sniff out one of the local pubs serving local eats to get a taste of Gloucestershire.

Very tidy and clearly designed pitches. Staff were very friendly. Felt Covid safe esp in own motorhome.

    Disliked:

Noise although you get used to it! Fully serviced pitches are fantastic and very level, but quite tight to turn into in a Motorhome without going on the grass.

Fantastic site , good covid measures in place and friendly helpful staff

    Disliked:

The entrance to site is very steep which meant we grounded out on arrival and departure. This is a problem for long motorhomes . For this reason we would not book this site again only due to grounding out otherwise it’s perfect.

Friendly staff, very clean toilets and shower, facilities great (pot wash, laundry, chemical toilet point), would definitely come back

    Disliked:

A small thing which was that the pitch had some wheel ruts in it which would have been fine normally but pooled with water in the storm so I had to move my van and awning to a different part of the pitch during the weekend as water was coming in. Maybe holes can be filled in with wood chips after wet weather to keep the pitches flat? Just a thought and wouldn't have been an issue except for storm Aiden! :-)

Local attractions

With Cheltenham racecourse a mere 30 minutes’ drive away, this site is a prime pick for horsey types – but if the gee-gees don’t have the family galloping for joy, there are other four-legged, fleet and feathered options at the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens, also half an hour from base.

If the Cotswold Gardens grow enthusiasm for stately houses and grand designs, there’s plenty else hereabouts to entice: Chavenage House, Berkeley Castle, Bowood House, Sudeley Castle, Newark Park and Dyrham Park are all within an hour for old piles, and Westonbirt Arboretum and the gardens at Highgrove (Charlie and Camilla’s royal digs) are definitely worth a turn half an hour away.

For more urban explores, start 15 minutes from the site in the scenic village of Bibury to have a poke around the Chedworth Roman Villa, travel on to Bourton-on-the-Water (20 minutes) for Birdland, a maze, a motoring museum and a model village, then take things up a notch in Cirencester, where there are Roman remains, museums, markets, parks and a manor house all waiting for visitors.

Keep things soothingly low-key with a spin on the Swindon and Cricklade steam railway, 25 minutes away, or get a bit more active with watersports, paintball, fishing and horse riding at Cotswold Water Park or an adrenaline-fuelled day at the Gloucestershire Rally School, both within 20 minutes.

Must see

  • Painswick Rococo Garden (16.5 kilometres)
  • Sudeley Castle Gardens and Exhibition (22.3 kilometres)
  • Gloucester Quays (23.1 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Chedworth Roman Villa (8.8 kilometres)
  • Lodge Park and Sherborne Estate (14.2 kilometres)
