Field 5

General

  • Award-winning park a short drive from Ashbourne and the Peak District
  • Fishing lake, bird hide, pool, paddling pool, playgrounds and arcade
  • Inn, microbrewery, café bar, supermarket, cricket and entertainment

Callow Top Holiday Park has received lots of awards, and it’s easy to see why: the location is great, and the list of facilities endless.

Location first: this fab park is five minutes' drive from Ashbourne, at the southern gateway to the Peak District National Park; guests can pedal off on the Tissington Trail straight from the grounds. Peak District days aplenty are around too, for ambling around old country piles, getting busy in the countryside with the many active options nearby, or taking the kids to one of the local theme parks...

And the endless list of facilities? From May to September, visitors can callow-n around in the heated outdoor swimming pool and paddling pools; there’s also an amusement arcade, well-designed playgrounds and a games field with football and cricket pitches, plus a volleyball court... And you can hire bikes, bait your hook at the fishing lake or do some twitching in the bird hide.

Eats are also sorted at The Callow Inn, a former drovers’ inn serving trad pub grub and kids' meals as well as – splendidly – Callow Top's own beer from the on-site microbrewery; the park also has a café bar with pool tables and satellite TV. There’s an on-site supermarket selling all the essentials too.

In season, you won’t need to go far for entertainment, with outdoor family discos, live bands, quiz nights and bingo all laid on... the list of stuff to do here is indeed endless...

Adult section of pub , well stocked shop if needed.
Firework display was amazing, well organised and worth seeing.

    Disliked:

Pitch felt like being parked on a car park, with car spaces opposite pitch for cars.
Pitch was unkept (may have been time of year) but we travel through winter and other places have still been well kept.
Pub ran out of many drinks ale & spirit's alike.
Sunday morning Breakfast !! Only 6 tables occupied , so couldn't say they were busy.
Ordered 2 full English told there was no beans left and we would have to have our tea in takeaway cups as they had no clean ones.
Okay not the end of the world.
With a minimum of 4 assistants behind the service bar at any one time , I thought food wouldn't be long , how wrong was I.
1hr 25mins later our breakfast arrived, one plate had beans ? I asked for poached eggs and got undercooked fried , everything was luke warm at it's best, needless to say most of the food was left.
If it wasn't for the lovely polite lad who was covering front of house we would have asked for our money back , but he was apologetic and offered a free drink for the wait, he seemed to be doing everything by himself.
In a nutshell I couldn't wait to leave , we travel most weekends and I can say out of the last 40 or so it's only the 2nd place I have felt like this about.
Shame we had tried to get on this site for the last 2years for bonfire weekend, so it was something we were looking forward to, but sadly we won't be returning.

Halloween celebrations were in full swing when we arrived, child and adult witches, ghouls, zombies and horror everywhere we looked. Everyone was having fun and the caravans, campers and tents were trimmed up like scenes from the apocalypse.
We had been looking for a quiet site, but weren’t disappointed that the whole site was in party mode when we arrived. The staff had obviously put a lot of work in to ensure that everyone enjoyed the event.

    Disliked:

Not the sites fault but it had been a wet week, and we were unlucky to jump out into the puddle!

Direct access to the Tissington Trail and therefore an easy walk into Ashbourne. Cafe/bar serving food a bonus as we were only staying as a stop over as part of a longer journey and therefore didn't need to cook in the camper that night.

    Flexibility around pitch location.
    1/2 price offer.

    Disliked:

No visitors allowed & this was not that obvious from website. Was NOT included in the main conditions.
As we picked this site so that we could meet up with family on the Saturday for lunch, if we had spotted this before booking in we would not have stayed.
Access to Tissington Trail is difficult & think this she should be highlighted on their website. Definitely not family/cycle friendly.

Lovey site, not far from Ashbourne or bike trails.
Has plenty to do for children and although the pool or pub wasn't open when we stayed, all looked good.
Only negative was the showers, dated and cold the first minute of the 4 minute payment.
Would book again, however I think the shower issues would be worse in busy times.
    Staff helpful and friendly too.

Local attractions

As it's set in prime Derbyshire territory, there are fab walks all around Callow Top; for pedallers, the Tissington Trail provides a (mainly flat) route out of the grounds right into the Peak District.

The local region has loads to all ages, from the stately Chatsworth House and historic spa towns of Buxton and Matlock, to the chills, spills and thrills of Alton Towers. Visitors of an excitable disposition can keep their adrenaline boosted with watersports, paintballing, zipwiring, high wire assault courses, quad biking and laser tag all available nearby.

Take younger kids on a trip to Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park or a ride in a cable car followed by some cave exploring at the Heights of Abraham. Other options include walking among macaque monkeys in the Monkey Forest at the Trentham Estate, near Stoke on Trent, where they can also make like an ape on the aerial walkways: all that should buy you some privileges at Trentham’s shopping village or lakeside café, surely...?
