Orchard View Farm: Caravan pitch with a view of the Chiltern Hills

General

  • Well-equipped site on a working farm overlooking the Chiltern Hills
  • A 15-minute drive from Thame and 40 minutes from Oxford
  • Café-restaurant, bike hire, butchery and farm shop with a deli counter

Wake up to see the sun rising over the Chiltern Hills while listening to the gentle murmur of sheep, pigs and deer during a stay at Orchard View Farm, a scenic Buckinghamshire spot within 15 minutes’ drive of Aylesbury, Thame and Princes Risborough.

Not that guests will ever need to venture to the town for food if they don't fancy moving – eats and drinks are sorted courtesy of the site’s fantastically stocked farm shop and deli or by dining at the Trough Garden Kitchen. This café and restaurant serves up a range of meals, including those made from ingredients sourced at the site’s award-winning butchery and cooked in woodburning ovens.

Looking after nature is just as important to the owners of this small farm as serving up tasty grub – they’ve worked hard to create a serene and scenic environment in the grounds by planting wildflower meadows, more than 100 trees and over 350 metres of mixed native hedging.

Orchard View Farm is five minutes’ drive from the western edges of the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so it's safe to suggest that the local area is also rather pretty for walks. Crime fiction fan? Or just fond of cute country cottages? Head off on a self-guided Midsomer Murders-themed tour of nearby villages (you can download a trail map from the internet).

Oxford is 40 minutes’ drive from the site and central London takes an hour and 20 minutes to reach.

Amazing site. Extremely friendly team, especially owner Jim and site Manager Steve. Great views of the countryside. The meat available from the butchers on site was exceptional and the farm shop had a great selection of food & drinks.
Showers and toilets very clean and well maintained.

Great tranquil and relaxing camping experience in the countryside.
Flat well kept grass area for tent pitches.
Wheelbarrows available to take bags from car to tent area.
Farm shop full to the brim of goodies, the cider was one of my favourite purchases.
Toilets and showers had a high standard of cleanliness maintained daily. Hand soap and sanitiser provided.
Washing up area with hot water was a bonus.
Steve and James very welcoming and checked in with us when walking round the camp site.
Nice roads to cycle on and a few pubs not too far away. Would not hesitate to recommend to friends.

Mixed messages at times, I was told I couldn’t arrive at 8pm on the phone then corrected upon arrival the next morning that I could have come so missed out on one night that I’d paid for, but at least I know for next time.
I wanted to book an extra night as I’d missed out on the first one, told in the shop they didn’t know how, then corrected by James that I could do it in the shop.
Can’t fault Steve and James, and overall staff very helpful, just one that let it down for me as he seemed not happy to help and told me to do my booking online.
Slight smell of sewerage where we were pitched.

From the manager...

So glad that overall you enjoyed your stay........but really sorry about the mixed message regarding the arrival time. We ask that people arrive before 5.00 pm but understand that on a Friday it is not always possible. We try to be understanding and flexible on arrival times and I apologise that we let you down this time. when you come again email me personally. Sorry about the sewerage smell.....on the to do list. Steve

Great Farm location and tent pitches were great and socially distanced sufficiently. Toilet and Shower block great with the Cafe, shop and kids paly area within the complex great to save you having to take lots of provisions. Has farms own produce to purchase, farm has deer, sheep, pigs and some great Red Kites locally overhead.

    Disliked:

Nothing really with an improvement for the site to have some local walks and places to visit listed, as was hard to search for any paths etc coming from outside the area. Other sites visited have a wealth of these if required and would be an extra positive for the site to provide.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for taking the time to submit a review. Our recently erected notice board now has a map of local walks and other information. Additionally we now display leaflets for local attractions in the shower block.......so we do listen !! Best wishes Steve

The children loved being close to the sheep and other animals in the fields. They also enjoyed playing on the hay bales. The showers, dishwashing area and toilets were clean, and it was good that they were close by. The manager was very friendly, and he gave us directions to local beauty spots. The ground was soft, which was good for banging in pegs and swing ball.

    Disliked:

Because we arrived on a bank holiday weekend, it was a little crowded at first. Also, we thought the marshmallows were a bit expensive.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review.....feedback allows us to make changes to improve the visitor experience.....not tried the marshmallows but I am sure that they were yummy!! Kind regards Steve

From the manager...

Hi Steve.......thanks for your review especially the commnt about feeling a bit cramped. We have recently extended the space between pitches on the Old Apiary field but we do know that we need to do more.......we are looking at a re-design of this field and have taken this particular comment on board. We are still offering a generous 9m x 9m pitch and our premium pitches are 15m x 15m. Steve

The loud mouthed kids that turned up late and ruined the entire trip. Shouting at the tops of there voices at 1am. At least the teacher come over to apologise but it was to late. Watching my child sleep with he’s hands covering he’s ears was not good.

From the manager...

Many thanks for your review. I am abxolutely devastated thout you experienced an issue with some campers. I will investigate and make my feelings known to the organiser! Remind of your bad experience when you book to visit us again. Stave

Ease yourself into your escape slowly by setting off on walks through the Chiltern Hills (five minutes’ drive). This Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is a 324-square-mile chalk escarpment running from the River Thames in Oxfordshire to Hitchin in Hertfordshire.

Highlights here include Wendover Woods, a Forestry Commission collection of trees with fitness and cycling trails, while four miles away (and 15 minutes’ drive from the park) is Aylesbury with its hodgepodge of Georgian, Jacobean and Tudor architecture. Browse the Bucks County Museum’s local history and culture exhibits, making sure to stop by the Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery for displays championing the characters from the novelist’s books.

Just outside the town, wander around Waddesdon Manor, a French-inspired chateau with gorgeous gardens, or turn back the clock to the 1940s at Bletchley Park (40 minutes), the country house where the Allies broke the enigma code during the Second World War.

If city trips are what you fancy, set off for the compelling colleges of Oxford (35 minutes) or the spectacular sights of Central London (an hour and 20 minutes).
