  • Peaceful woodland park 10 minutes' drive from Wokingham centre
  • An hour's drive from Oxford, the New Forest and the south coast
  • Next door to a lake and country park for fishing and walks
Settle in for a stay at Wokingham’s California Chalet and Touring Park and you’ll be in good historical company: the park’s location was once part of Windsor Forest and a fave hunting ground of the Tudor royals. These days the five-acre site has been set up as a peaceful woodland park, with heaps of space for a quiet family break. Hunting is long gone, but neighbouring Longmoor Lake is a fab place for a spot of fishing: carp, pike, tench, roach and perch are up for grabs if you’ve got the relevant rod licence. Also just next door is California Country Park, a 100-acre park with wildlife trails, a playground, picnic areas, paddling pool and a cosy café for daytime eats. For further foodie needs, a pub, chip shop and supermarket are a five-minute drive away. If you’re looking to venture a little further afield, Wokingham’s well placed for exploring the attractions of Berkshire and beyond – with a drive of an hour or so you can be wandering around Oxford, spotting ponies in the New Forest or taking in the sea air on the south coast. Facilities on site are kept minimal to preserve the peaceful vibe, but all the essentials are in place: a laundry room (with clothes drying area), an outdoor washing-up area and a well-appointed toilet block with accessible facilities, hot showers and useful bits and bobs like razor points. Staff make a point of keeping an eye on this last to make sure it's always in fine fettle for guests.

Liked: Quiet and serene Lovely ambience and beautifully woken by the sound of birds. Pitch was close to the bathrooms. Brilliant sized pitch and decent lighting.

Disliked: Hard to secure our awning into the ground as it was too hard. Our hook up cable and waste water box was removed by staff as there was confusion thinking we had left but we were booked in for 2 nights. We left them on our pitch as we were out for the day.

Liked: Really spacious pitches, beautifully maintained

Disliked: Didn’t really see any staff all weekend other than in the shop. Not overly an issue, but hopefully in the busier season they will be more evident.

Liked: Pleasant surroundings with many trees and a lake.

Disliked: Getting there - the amount of roads closed made it difficult if you are not local. However, the team are going to put together some notes for customers, so that the road closures can be avoided.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site (premium)

Liked: Spacious well laid out pitches with lots of privacy from high hedges and careful planting. Very clean, very tidy and very quiet even though it was the Easter school holidays. Nice warm shower/toilet block. And also very clean.

Disliked: Washing up water could have been slightly hotter to help with washing greasy pans!

Liked: First time visiting California chalet and touring park and we loved it. The park itself is clean and well looked after. Everyone was friendly and the staff were welcoming. Very easy to find our pitch as they’re allocated with a number. Would definitely stay again. Lots of activities to do and a short walk to the park if you’re travelling with children.

Fully-serviced concrete and grass caravan site (premium)

Liked: The setting is good, with a lakeside walk and country park adjacent.

Disliked: Utterly useless wifi. So called 'hardstanding' pitches nothing more than loose pebbles over the soil beneath. No warning given that the road the site is on has large notices that the road is CLOSED. Endless notices pinned up everywhere on site with 'Do this' - 'Don't Do that'; confusing. Generally poorly managed with access to back up and info. minimal. Will not be using again.

Fully-serviced concrete slab caravan site (premium)

Liked: All facilities were clean and in good order. The site was well maintained in terms of landscaping and ideal that it had the country park, cafe, playground and lake just next door.

Disliked: It was fairly wet in the run up to our stay and we were warned that a portion of our pitch may flood. Luckily it didn’t rain much whilst we were staying so I don’t know if this would have been an issue.

Local attractions

There’s plenty of scope for fresh air in California Country Park (right next to the site), but if you fancy stretching your legs a little more, you’ve got plenty of choice: the South Downs National Park, New Forest and the Chiltern Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty are all within an hour’s drive for scenic walks and bike rides. Golfers can pick from three courses within a 15-minute drive. On fine days, take the kids to meet the friendly animals at Lockey Farm, 10 minutes away. For less clement days, the Museum of Berkshire Aviation, Skiplex Indoor Ski Slopes, Coral Reef waterpark and Gravity Force trampoline park are all about a 20-minute drive away. For a bit of culture and history, it will take half an hour or so to drive to Windsor Castle, or around an hour to Oxford for wanders around the university’s colleges and punting along the river.
