The site's closest beaches are at Le Pradet, with more sands and watersports at Hyères and Toulon a little further along the coast. The fashionable resort of Hyères has been visited by lofty personages such as Queen Victoria, Robert Louis Stevenson and Joseph Conrad; these days, it has several family options among its palm-treed surroundings, including the Kiddy Parc and Magic World amusement parks. From Hyères, take a boat trip out to the Îles d’Or, for long lengths of peaceful beaches away from the main tourist spots. Most of Porquerolles, the biggest island, is a nature reserve, set among three vineyards, a monastery, and around 50 kilometres of walking trails through oak and pine forests. Treasure Island, or Port-Cros, is a nature reserve surrounded by fish-filled waters that made up Europe's first maritime park: take a snorkelling trip along the underwater trail to get up close. More sandy beaches, a waterpark and watersports including scuba diving are available in Le Lavandou, 40 kilometres away; around the same distance is the medieval town of Bormes-les-Mimosas, and Brégançon Fort, the island fortress used as a bolthole by French presidents until 2003. Several vineyards of the Route des Vins are reachable within 50 kilometres.
