This was our first stay at the Anvil campsite. Karl, Kath and the team were brilliant hosts - they were all lovely people and their helpfulness and service were first class.
The pub was great. We enjoyed the food, both at the pub and as takeaway to eat back at our van. Their vegetarian and plant-based options were good, it was nice to see a menu and not feel like the non-meat options were an afterthought. They had top live music on the Saturday night, the pub was packed and I even got chatting to locals from the village and fellow campers, who all enthused about the pub and entertainment.
The pub is accessible via the entrance to the rear (closest to the car park and campsite) flat inside, with a spacious disabled toilet just inside the that entrance. Although there isn’t a toilet block on the campsite, you can use the loos whenever the pub is open. It was clear the team are mindful of disabilities and access and you don’t get that everywhere, so very refreshing.
As a self-propelling wheelchair user, the campsite was fine. There is a gravel car park between the pub and the campsite, and I was able to get across it both on my own and with a push. The entrance to the campsite slopes down onto the grass, not too difficult if you have help or are used to getting about navigating slightly challenging terrain. The pitches are on flat grass - pitches 5, 6, and 7 are closest to the campsite entrance and we were on 5, when we were there we saw that this was among the better pitches for wheelchairs and were pleased. The other pitches are also on flat grass but slightly further back. Pitch 7 would’ve been the optimum, but then you’re closest to the car park and as we have a little dog that would’ve meant considering if being closest to the car park would’ve been right for him.
Dogs aren’t permitted in the pub. This was made clear upon booking and we didn’t mind, and weighing all things up it didn’t detract from our experience.
Thank you so much for being brilliant, Anvil team. What a gem of a find, and we will see you again I am sure.
