General

  • By the world-famed salmon fishing spot of the Copper River
  • Right on the edge of the USA's biggest national park
  • Games area, gold panning, playground and free continental breakfasts

You'll certainly know you're in Alaska at this park. For Gakona Alaska RV Park is in a land of the outdoor activities beloved by active Alaskans – all on the edge of the huge and wild Wrangell–St. Elias National Park and Preserve, the biggest national park in the country.

Spectacular Alaskan scenery is all around this region, along with a vast range of outdoorsy options like mountain hiking and biking, mountaineering, boating and off-road driving. Fisherfolk are particularly well sorted here, as the RV park is on the 290-mile run of the Copper River, waters so famed for salmon that they're hailed as among the very best on the planet.

There's first-rate birdwatching around the river too: the Copper's delta is the biggest wetlands on North America's Pacific coast, home to 16 million birds throughout the year including the world's entire population of western sandpipers.

You'll need an Alaskan rest after all that... so how fortuitous that Gakona Alaska RV Park is well set up for cosy times on base. Guests can have gentle times at the outdoor games area (horseshoes, volleyball, bocce and croquet are all on offer); try their luck with a spot of gold panning, or idle around thinking about eats: barbecues and campfires are both allowed here, and Gakona town is within a few miles for supplies.

Gakona also has a small shop, a playground, toilets, showers, a laundry room and free wifi. A free continental breakfast is available to all guests.

I reserved a cabin. A mistake was made and we were placed in a little dome where the beds had no linen. We were fine because we busted out the sleeping bags, but I double checked my booking and I did indeed reserve a cabin that had pictures of beds with linens and blankets and pillows and a private restroom.

Local attractions

You'll find something to suit you in the surrounding national park whatever your type of outdoor taste, as Wrangell–St. Elias covers a whopping 13.2 million acres – the same size as Switzerland and Yellowstone and Yosemite national parks (or six Yosemites) combined.

Drive 35 minutes or so south to the park's information hub the Copper Center to find out the mammoth range of stuff to see and do in this mammoth park, wander the exhibit hall or set off on one of the short hiking trails. Guided walks and talks are available in the summer months.

The folk at the visitor centre can also assist if it's flying you fancy: air taxis, sightseeing, tours, one-off trips and tailored itineraries are all available.
