  • Friendly site in the 'county of the seven beaches'
  • Asturian cider bar serving traditional cuisine
  • Pétanque court, play area and food shop
Seven beaches, you say? And an on-site cider bar? Well now, Camping Las Gaviotas is the sort of place you seek for lengthy Spanish hols. Beaches first: pack your beach towel and your bucket and spade when staying around here, as there are so many sandy stretches around that the area's known as the county of the seven beaches/las siete playas. (You'll be chuffed to hear this isn't exactly literal either: this setting edged by the Cantabrian Sea and the coast of the Atlantic Ocean on Spain's northern coast and France's south west has beaches totalling many more than seven). All this sandy stuff is in the Asturias municipality of Castrillón, about an hour from the inland landscapes of the Cantabrian mountains and the Somiedo Natural Park. To hike and explore like historic types, five roads lead from Asturias to the ancient pilgrimage destination of Santiago de Compostela. And that cider bar? Camping Las Gaviotas has its own, where you can also tuck into traditional dishes of the region – perhaps after a day out and about on the many local hiking trails. There's a food shop too if you want to bring food (and cider) bits back to your base for a barbecue: it's essential either way to fuel up for plenty of beach basking pep the next day. Other facilities at you and the family's coastal disposal are a play area and a pétanque court, or you could opt for organised events at the summer entertainment for all ages, ranging from zumba classes to sports tournaments.

Local attractions

Beach basks, beach strolls and cove and coastal hikes are all around here: the sands are the main attraction of this region, such as secluded Reguero beach and its several coves that join at low tide. For a scenic walk, wait for low tide then trek to Munielles beach past the huge rocks of Peña La Furada (the Pierced Rock) at its western side. Another option is La Peñona peninsula at the end of Salinas beach in the borough of Castrillón, home to the Philippe Cousteau Anchor Museum (five and a half kilometres from the site). Further afield, five routes and connections lead to Santiago de Compostela from Asturias: the coastal road, the original or primitive route, two connections between these, and the connection between the French route via the San Salvador way.
