- Small mountain site among spectacular views in the Basque Country
- Overlooking the Aitzgorri mountains and two kilometres from Legazpi
- 50 minutes from San Sebastián, Bilbao, Pamplona and Vitoria
Stunning Basque Country vistas are yours for the taking at this splendidly set Spanish site, whether your tastes are for wandering peacefully around this mountainous terrain, lounging around your pitch while someone else sorts out the barbecue, or settling snugly down in the cosy communal room for supper amid the scenery.
As you might have figured out, this is a quiet and countryside setting: Camping Rural Lakiola is 575 metres above sea level, overlooking the Aitzgorri mountains that make up the highest massif in the Basque, and in a peaceful part of the land where the actively minded can get their hiking, mountain biking and climbing groove on in serene surroundings.
The site's local village is Legazpi, a couple of kilometres away in the Basque's famed Valle del Hierro or Iron Valley. The Basque's second biggest natural park, Aizkorri-Aratz, is within a short drive; heading coastwards (because you must), Legazpi is roughly equisdant between San Sebastián and Bilbao, about 50 minutes from each. Pamplona and Vitoria are both around the same distance.
Pitches are in a spacious level field, overlooking the mountains; amenities include a bathroom building with two toilets and two showers, running water and disabled facilities, a laundry room and a washing-up area. There's also the aforementioned communal room with dining table, chairs, a microwave and spectacular mountain views, as well as sockets for guests to charge up their various electronic bits and bobs.

Many sites set a maximum occupancy of 6/8 people per pitch, so try breaking your booking down into smaller groups to generate more results. For example, if you’re a group of 10, enter 5 people in your initial search and then book 2 pitches.
However, where the pitch or accommodation occupancy allows it, you can make a booking for up to 30 adults and 30 children in one booking.
To book multiple pitches or accommodation, use the 'Special requests' box on the booking page to ask to be sited together. Complete the booking form for the first booking (you can add a password and save your card so that we remember your details). Then click "Make another booking like this" at the top of the confirmation page to make the next booking.
Large groups: check the listing page for any group restrictions set out in the terms and section titled ‘Please note’.
Large tents/caravans: check the restrictions on unit dimensions to ensure your unit is suitable for the space you will be provided with.

Hiking, cycling, mountain biking, climbing and paragliding can all be plunged into here if you so desire; you're under an hour from the cracking Spanish coast, and teeny towns, mountain villages, regional museums and splendid Basque Country cuisine are all within your curious grasp. A playground, picnic tables and clay pigeon shooting are available at the park of Urtatza, close to the local village of Legazpia.
Like its surrounding mountainous terrain, Legazpia is known for its iron industry and was a site for iron mining for centuries. There's a museum in town to find out more; if you're around on Sundays from April to October you should strike forth too to see the firing up of the Mirandaola ironworks, pretty much as it did in medieval times. Scholarly sorts might also care for a trip to Oñati about half an hour away, to see one of the oldest universities on the Iberian peninsula.
Wherever you end up, the Camping Rural Lakiola team rightly points out that the Basque Country is renowned for its chefs and its gastronomy, so venture out to fill up on as many pintxos (tapas) as you can at the many local bars and restaurants.
