If you're in party mode, your celebratory self might be chuffed to hear that this Costa Brava site is just 20 minutes' drive along the coast from glitzy Benidorm. And if you're not in party mode, or indeed have been in Benidorm for the night and now must crawl back to a quiet space and much Alka-Seltzer, you should be even more chuffed to hear about the peaceful setting of Camping Playa Paraíso. This well-maintained Alicante park is a short walk from a sandy beach (do remember your sunshades and a few gallons of water if you're seeking refuge on the sands from your hangover), and is 15 minutes' walk from the famed seaside resort of Villajoyosa. If you baulk at even stirring that far, all you need is right on site: a bar-restaurant to get you fuelled and once more fighting fit; a supermarket for the same, and an outdoor pool, open all year round if weather allows. And if you don't even want to stir as far as the bar or pool? The pitches here are spacious enough to lounge around on for the day, whether you're here on a short hol or a long winter escape. Trees provide shade to some pitches; overhead sunshades are on others. If you seek thrills and entertainment without venturing to Benidorm, an entertainment programme with activities for all ages is available during peak season, and you can book outdoor adventures like kayaking, paddleboarding and trekking directly on site – once your head feels a bit better.

Local attractions

Book activities on site to get out onto the water or into the surrounding countryside from here, or venture off on your own by foot or bike. Cycle hire, fishing, golf, horse riding and mountain biking are all nearby. It's a 15-minute walk from here to the popular seaside resort of Villajoyosa, known for its three-kilometre length of golden beach as well as for its food and trading history: the town was first settled in the sixth century and has been an essential trade point for wine and olive oil among other tasty treats. Modern days have been much sweeter since 19th-century merchants started the Villajoyosa chocolate trade; learn the cocoa-based history with a trip to the chocolate museum or a free tour around the chocolate factory. Drive for 20 minutes or take the bus for about an hour from Villajoyosa to reach Benidorm, the party town packed with bars and nightclubs. It has a decent daytime vibe for families too if you're not up for the nightclubbing, with five big beaches to pick from, alongside plentiful days of shrieking among its theme parks and waterpark.
