Fancy a restful break in sunny Alicante – but feel thoroughly tuckered at the thought of thousands of other tourists who’ve had the same idea? Holiday seekers in pursuit of peace, nature and active options should give serious Spanish consideration to Camping Bungalows Mariola, deep in the Sierra de Mariola Natural Park. Several of the area’s mountain hikes and bike trails are within 10 kilometres of this peaceful site – la Font de Mariola, La Cava Blanca o Bolumini and La Cava Arquejada are all in the region – and plenty of other outdoor days are within a reasonable distance: you might rather fancy the hot air balloon rides across the mountains, gorges and medieval villages of the Sierra de Mariola… You may of course – it is Alicante, after all – prefer to bask lizardlike in the sun and do nothing more active than occasionally dip your/the kids’ sunburned selves in the open air pool and paddling pool, surrounded by the olive trees which have grown here for over a century. Camping Bungalows Mariola also has a pétanque court for sunny afternoons, a multisports court for those who like to run around in hot weather, and a playground to pack the kids off to while the bigger folks concentrate on their tan. Once tans are suitably topped up, sample some homemade local cuisine at the park restaurant, sample a sangria at the bar, or stock up on some (cooling) produce from the mini market for a peaceful picnic in the grounds.

Route directions

From Alcoy: Follow the directions to Banyeres de Mariola on the CV-795 and go through the tunnel in Salt. Take the CV-794 and follow the signs for Bocairent and then for the site. The site is at the 9km mark. From Bocairent: Take the CV-794 and follow the signposts to Alcoy and then to the site. Use this road if you are travelling with a motorhome or touring caravan.

Local attractions

Hire a bike from the site staff and pedal off into the Sierra de Mariola mountain range for some stunning scenery: as well as the Font de Mariola, La Cava Blanca o Bolumini and La Cava Arquejada trails, the Alto del Montcabrer, Don Miguel, Nacimiento del Vilanopó and La Cova de la Sarsa are within 10 kilometrs too, and all are suitable for travellers by foot as well as by wheel. If this is a tad too active for an Alicante holiday, sit among the mountains and nature spot instead: Sierra de Mariola is well known for its flora and herbs: many of its 1,200+ plant species have been used for centuries in local food and medicine. Wildlife watchers should spot several species among the mountains including wild boars, golden eagles, hawks, badgers and vultures, which were reintroduced to the park in 2002. If you're hiking/biking, follow the disused railway line of the Alcoy Green Route, one of Spain’s nine Green Stations, from Sierra de Mariola to the small city of Alcoy about 15 kilometres away and a plate of bajogues farades on arrival.
