General

  • Quiet, friendly site in the grounds of a family-owned farmhouse
  • Just over an hour's drive from Barcelona and 25 minutes from Cardona
  • Restaurant serving traditional dishes in converted wine cellar

It’ll only take you slightly more than an hour to get to Camping Cal Paradís from the busy streets of Barcelona, but it’s highly likely you’ll feel like you’ve arrived in another world. Up here in the foothills of the Pyrenees is a chilled-out place that’s all about relaxing in the fresh air, wandering through the forests, communing with nature and spending nights gazing up at the starry, starry skies.

There’s not even very much in the way of mobile phone signal up here, meaning you can truly justify setting up your out-of-office message (gasping gadget geeks will have to make do with what they can get from the wifi zone or perhaps just survive in the old-fashioned way for a little while). What you’ll get instead is a warm welcome from this friendly site in the grounds of an old stone farmhouse that’s been passed down several generations of the same family since it was built in 1850. Family members here include a bunch of furry friends that you can meet as you wander around the farm saying hola to the goats, rabbits and chickens as you go.

Those partial to a tipple or two from time to time will no doubt be particularly chuffed to hear that they may be eating their dinner in the old wine cellar, now converted (along with a collection of farm outhouses) to form the restaurant. Fittingly, the food here is good old traditional cooking, designed to fuel you well for your days trekking around in the hills – think local cheeses, homemade sausages, grilled rabbit, paella and all manner of desserts made with farm honey. If you’ve been inspired to create for yourself, there’s also a covered barbecue area for guests’ use, and a bar where you can retreat for post-feasting drinks.

And what of the time when one’s not filling one’s tummy with gorgeous treats? Work on creating an appetite for your next nibbles with a game of your choosing at the multisports pitch or in the games room, practise your pétanque technique or dive into the outdoor pool for a cooling dip. There’s also a playground for los niños to charge about in, and a library of books for those who’ve decided to go native and embrace the slower pace of rural life with an extended period of staying put by the pool (always rather an excellent way to spend a rural day).

Local attractions

If you’d like to get out for a hike in the hills, start by having a word with the site staff – being kindly souls who don’t want you to get lost, they’ve collated a collection of routes that start directly from the site and can advise on one that suits your style and fitness level. Mountain bikers are similarly well provided with trails, including those heading to the towers of Fals Castle or to the peaks of the Serra de Castelltallat range. Or for a cycle outing with no chance of getting lost, head to the Ecorail track 20 minutes away, where you’ll pedal along the old train tracks on specially converted vehicles.

For a day out that’s a little more sedate, there’s fab fishing in the Cardener river, which is about 15 minutes away in the car; in autumn you may be able to supplement your catch with some wild mushrooms you’ve foraged locally (with expert advice, of course). Or you could take the 10-minute drive to the Houses of Matamargó, a house museum that shows how rural lives have changed since the 16th century, or the hour’s journey to the Zoo of the Pyrenees to watch bird of prey displays, feed lambs and see local wildlife including ferrets and wild boar. Later on, drop in to the Castelltallat astronomical observatory, half an hour away, to look up at the night sky – the dark skies in this area make it prime stargazing territory.

Other days out nearby include Montserrat, 45 minutes away, to visit the Benedictine monastery, and Cardona, where you can take tours of the medieval castle and the former salt mines just outside town. Or you could always head into Barcelona (around an hour and 15 minutes in the car) to ogle Gaudi’s finest crazy architecture, shop for tasty treats at the Boqueria market or visit museums dedicated to the works of Picasso and Miró.
