  • Family-run park between the mountains and the sea
  • With pool, playground, restaurant bar and terrace
  • A 30-minute drive to Barcelona
Between sea and mountain, a 30-minute drive to Barcelona and only about 100 metres from the beach... one could settle down at Catalonia's Camping El Carlitos very nicely, gracias very much. And indeed the family that run the place agree with such a suggestion, for they've been happily in situ at this Arenys de Mar site since 1977, welcoming guests that bounce between clambering about in the mountains of Montenegre and flopping out on the sandy beach just up the road (or chilling out in the seafront bars and restaurants that line its edge). It's a great swathe of space they've got here, too, and they've made the most of that by packing the place with plenty of leisure facilities. Give the kids a run about at the football field and playground, challenge your amigos to a game of pétanque or take a dip in the seasonal outdoor pool. If you don't fancy going out in search of sustenance, stick about on site for eats and drinks at the restaurant and bar (ideally on the terrace if it's fine weather…) Other handy amenities on site include a launderette, a shop and a toilet block with loos and hot showers.

Local attractions

One of the biggest municipalities in the Maresme, Arenys de Mar, is less than two kilometres from Camping El Carlitos – wander over here in 20 minutes or so for watersports including paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing lessons, or venture over in the late afternoon/evening to see the daily fish auction. A 15-minutes drive away, the Montnegre and El Corredor Nature Reserve is filled with forests and species such as wild boar, civet cat, goshawk, woodpeckers and white snakes; it has guided tours as well as mountain bike routes. Cracking Girona is about 60 kilometres away and well worth a day trip for its medieval architecture, ancient cathedral and Plaça de la Independència or Independence Square; walking the old city walls is a bit of a must too. And then there's Barcelona... The many, many musts in the city (45 kilometres away) include the modernist architecture, Antoni Gaudí's works, the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, La Pedrera, La Boqueria food market... You can drive down here in about 45 minutes or glide down in more laidback fashion by boarding the train from Canet de Mar station, 20 minutes' walk away.

O'Hara 2 bedroom static caravan (sea view)

Liked: Beautiful views on blue sea and green hills from the terrasse of our mobile-home. The mobile-home was well equipped and very clean. Easy access to the beach via underground passage under the main road to Barcelona, about 10-minutes walk. (quite a slope to walk back up as we were on a hill, but good exercise) The beach itself was huge, with clean, slightly corse sand, and clean transparent sea most days, except after storms.

Disliked: The Spanish weather was very hot end August/beg September, and the O'Hara mobile home with its dark roof would have been more adapted to a cooler weather. We were struggling to keep it to a bearable temperature by covering all windows with towels, ventilating as much as we could, but it was HOT! I would advise the management to paint the roofs white to keep the O'Hara mobile homes a bit cooler.
