Oh, those views… you could probably cope with gazing at them for a few hours/days/the rest of eternity, yes? Pick a pitch at Camping La Viñuela, in Andalusia’s Axarquía area, to sit and admire the outlook from the comfort of the restaurant terrace while friendly folk bring you a succession of drinks, snacks and grilled main meals. If you like to put names to things, those views are of the Embalse de la Viñuela lake and La Maroma, the region’s tallest mountain. If that peak has enticed you over for a closer peek, the mountains and caves of the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park are around 35 minutes away by car. It’s a most peaceful rural spot, but it’s not that far from civilisation – supermarkets and other food shops are 10 minutes’ drive away in La Viñuela and the large El Ingenio mall is 15 minutes away for clothes shops, cinemas and a wide range of restaurants. Beachy days can be had 25 minutes away in Torre del Mar and historic wanders in gorgeous Granada, an hour and a half away. Roam all you wish, or not at all – a day spent on site can be easily spent splashing in the open-air pool and/or kids’ pool, having a kickabout at the small football field and sampling sweet treats from the ice cream shop that opens up in summer. Snack bits for a picnic lunch (think fresh bread and cured meats…) can be picked up at the site shop.

Liked: The views were spectacular the showers were clean & hot. There was a delivery of bread each day which you had to order, the receptionist was lovely & friendly 1

Disliked: Very hilly and from the description on website led you to believe you would be on the edge of the lake but it was quite a distance away and down a steep hillside

Liked: Excellent site,but do not book via pitch up. I ended up paying €70 for 2 nights via the pitch up link instead of €46 if I had booked directly and used my ACI discount card(not accepted if booked via pitch up) good pitches,fantastic views,brilliant restaurants nearby and although I didn’t use the swimming pool, it looked excellent. Clean good facilities and large washing machines. Would stay again, but not via pitch up.

Disliked: Pitch up charging too much.

Disliked: The pitches were rather tricky to manoeuvre into . The area was very steep for cycling.

Disliked: Check your Bill when eating in restaurant . The man with blonde streaks in his hair with the white painted finger nails decided to add the price of 2 beers on our Bill . He removed our first Bill from the bar area after I looked at it then presented me with another Bill with more on it I paid went back to the van and translated the Bill . I went back and confronted the waiter he immediately instructed bar man to return the price of their free beers. They knew they were caught red handed just because I don't speak the language doesn't mean you can rip us off .it's a shame because it totally spoiled our couple of days .

Liked: Lovely setting with impecable service. Friendly welcome and uncomplicated reception. Spacious and clean pitch with beautiful open views. Clean toilets and heated shower facilities. The staff is amazing and assists with every request. Great Restaurant on site and small shop for convenience. Will be back without a doubt. Amazing experience.

Liked: Restaurant , lady serving us was so welcoming and friendly. The pool area looked ok.

Disliked: Receptionist didn’t appear to be bothered whether we we there or not, could have been a bit welcoming. Photos are quite deceptive as you can’t see the lake really from the pitches. The drive there from inland was pretty terrifying, very winding mountain side roads.

Liked: The view over the lake and mountains is amazing, lovely large swimming pool, lovely showers which are clean and powerful. Free Wi-Fi that actually works

Disliked: Lacked a bit of colour from flowers and looked a little tired but for the money you can't really complain

Local attractions

Want to keep things country for a while? Slope off to the Sierras de Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Natural Park (35 minutes’ drive) for hikes and climbing, or the Nerja Caves (also 35 minutes) to see the stalactites and stalagmites that lurk below the surface (and work out which ones are which…) Wing it home via the Honey Museum of Malaga (20 minutes) to learn about the local sweet stuff. Up for some sea air? Take the 25-minute drive to Torre del Mar for beaches, a waterpark or a round of golf with a sea view, or make it to Málaga (45 minutes) to hike around the hilltop Arab Alcazaba and take in the Picasso museum or fashion museum before hitting the sands. There’s another Alcazaba fort in Vélez-Málaga (20 minutes), along with a contemporary art museum, and the famed Moorish Alhambra is an hour and a half away in Granada – do your best to get up early if you’re headed here, so you’ll have time to stroll around the Albaicín Arab quarter, taking in tea and tagines along the way.
