Local attractions

La Breña reservoir, a short walk away in the nearby town of Almodóvar del Río, is a serenely scenic spot for beach basking and watersports; a watersports centre is at the reservoir for kit hire and lessons. The lake's 15-kilometre body is most popular for wakeboarding, with lots of runs, plenty of sheltered areas and three slalom courses. On land, venture out into the Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park for photoworthy hikes and bike rides as well as mucho wildlife: species to spot include wild boar, red deer, otters, lynxes and wolves on the ground and birds of prey including kestrels, buzzards, vultures and three flavours of eagle high up above. If you're this close to Córdoba, at least one day there is a must to see the remains of its history as a major Roman port and then an Islamic centre in the Middle Ages, and to wander its small streets, alleyways and squares. There's enough to investigate in Córdoba to keep all tastes out of mischief for days, but if time is pressing, must-sees include the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Old Town, the Roman temple, bridge and Mausoleum, and the spectacular Great Mosque of Córdoba, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
