What a nifty Spanish location: Camping Cabo de Gata is right in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, surrounded by palm mimosas and in the Almerian Gulf on the south-east coast of Andalusia. You'll have easy access to over 25km of splendid Spanish sands from here, and the area is one for outdoorsy enthusiasts as well as beach buffs – for arid Almeria has all sorts on offer in its warm and dry climate. (But do check out the beaches and the nature park first…) As suits a park in a such a sunny part of Spain, Camping Cabo de Gata has shady spots aplenty, on a modern and well-maintained park with up to date facilities, a swimming pool open all year and plenty of room to play tennis, basketball, football and pétanque. The site also has a bar and restaurant, takeaway, a mini market, an internet room, grey water and chemical disposal, bike hire and fresh bread for sale along with butane, propane and camping gas. Wifi is available too.

Route directions

From E15 - Autovía del Mediterráneo take Exit 460 signposted El Alquián or Exit 467 signposted Cabo de Gata. Follow directions to Cabo de Gata. From Almeria take the N-344 and continue towards Retamar. Cross the village and continue towards Cabo de Gata. When you reach the roundabout in Ruescas, take the exit towards Cabo de Gata on the AL-3115. After 300m take the road on your right and continue for approximately one kilometre up to the campsite entrance.

Local attractions

This is indeed an outdoorsy area – so make your way to reception and ask the Camping Cabo de Gata team about local diving, horse riding, trekking and watersports: the site has arrangements with many local businesses so should be able to sort you out whatever your interests. Also have a hike/ramble around the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, a splendid setting of desert, white beaches and sheer cliffs, and the only region in Europe with a desert climate. Popular activities in the park include birdwatching, guided photography days, diving, boat excursions and hiking senderos such as the Caldera de Majada Redonda trail. The site is 10km from the 18-hole course of Alboran Golf.
